Saw lots of Dylan threads but not this one.

Nice article in the Guardian.

Delighted to see that Dylan is 80 and still at it. I saw a picture of him a few years ago carrying a walking stick. This surprised me. I always thought of him as more of a Zimmer man. (Never get tired of that gag).

Happy birthday Bob.

Many thanks for going electric...

I loved this cartoon from the New Yorker ... https://www.newyorker.com/cartoons/daily-cartoon/monday-may-24th-dylan-electric?

@Gillymor: Hmmm - is that snark? I would have called it outright hostility - but I suppose it will have to do - thus bringing the proportion of snark up to one-quarter, which I believe approaches the usual measure. The cosmos may yet come back into balance.

My own thoughts on Dylan are that while I mostly like only what he did in the first decade of his career, maybe less, it hasn't much to do with 'going electric' as I loved Blonde and Blonde.

But Dylan's pulling power was brought home to me after I decided to run a few items at my tinpot music site Salut! Live in the build-up to, and on the day of, his 80th. I've just totted up the hits and they total 3,300 since the start of last week. No great shakes but double or treble the readership in a similar period at almost any other time.

I'm grateful that several hundred of them are accounted for by a piece on Martin Carthy's similar milestone birthday.

What can I say, I'm a people pleaser.
Actually I'm a big Zimmerman fan all the way through Blood on the Tracks and a few individual songs after that and I hope he had a very happy birthday.

And *I* think he richly deserved his Nobel.

Bob Dylan is the reason I'm a folkie, learned guitar, like Joan Baez, Leonard Cohen, Phil Ochs, Joni Mitchell and Dave Van Ronk and also the reason I am mildly interested in social justice issues and have written over 100 of my own songs.

He has a lot to answer for, and the album he released last year (39th studio album), at 78, was brilliant.

He did make me read Moby Dick, so no thanks for that Bob.

well, it says something to me that
many Mudcat members
are staying away, in droves, from this thread.

Me, I could no more ignore Bob Dylan
than I could ignore Lennon or McCartney --
essential to my early formative years.

Along with
Pete Seeger, Jean Ritchie, Jesse Fuller, Cynthia Gooding, Richard Dyer-Bennet, Susan Reed, Theodore Bikel . . .
