BS: What would be ironic?

If Biden and Putin declare a cyber war while meeting in Switzerland
It might be ironic.

If Bezos and his brother crashed into a Tesla Roadster while orbiting the Earth
It might be ironic.

If Boris Johnson marries his next wife in a bunker
it might be ironic

Maybe they all are, but maybe you don't really know what ironic means. You are by no means alone.

predicted and expected burn post

If the entire Trump family were victims of a mass shooting at a QAnon convention
it might be ironic

If that were to happened it would be a pretty safe bet that the mass shooting was carried out by an anti-firearms protestor - a real humdinger of a conspiracy theory.

ironic

The death of Trump is an enevitable conspiracy theory waiting to happen. Think of all the audits and 'redo overs' of the autopsies.
Think of the marketing of an actual 'piece of Trump'.

No, wrinkles are an "iron on it" - or should be.

Oxford:

"Irony...A state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what was or might be expected; an outcome cruelly, humorously, or strangely at odds with assumptions or expectations."

Merriam-Webster:

"Irony... incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result."

So draw your own conclusions.

Americans don't understand ' irony '

er Ambrose Bierce, Bob Newhart, Stephen Colbert, Randy Newman, TomLehrer

Call me a pedant. But I always envisage the plethora of languages means subtlety is a difficult act to pull off in that audience. Some have made a living at it!

About 15 years ago, an in-flight consumers' catalogue was offering for sale high-quality prints of an aviation painting that depicted a vintage DC-3 turning on its approach to an airport in the 1930s or '40s. The airport, if I remember correctly, had some special connection with the DC-3; let's say it was Atlanta. The ad read something like, "Ironically, [the artist] was born in Atlanta."

It impressed me because there was no conceivable irony in the fact, but the adverb did make pure coincidence or trivial inspiration sound significant and entertaining.

Dontrumpuel's posts are often ironic when he selects for his condemnation a political figure whom he emulates so much in the BS category.

Not really a burn. Just a fact.

I'm not sure "ironic" actually has a meaning any more, except in the vague sense of a twist in the course of events.

I've read that somebody put pink flamingos on his yard ironically, because he knew pink flamingos are corny. Okayeee....

The Onion once had a headline: "Young hipsters dine at Applebee's ironically." Applebee's is a mediocre restaurant chain. Okayeee...

If I scrubbed and polished my tile floor to kill dangerous microbes, then slipped and fell on it because it was slippery, that too would be ironic.

If I scrubbed my kitchen floor to kill food poisoning microbes, then got the germs from the scrubbing cloth on my pork pie and got food poisoning from it, that would be ironic. In the case of a particularly tasty pork pie, it would be delicious irony.

You might use it to "clean" your kitchen worktop, then put the food on the worktop. People do crackpot things at times.

The Merriam Webster definition is " incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result".

That seams weak. If I make a souffle and it collapses, that would fit the definition, but it wouldn't be ironic. For something to be ironic a moral, pretentious or humorous element must be involved.

I just saw something deliciously ironic on YouTube. A line of cars was stopped on a multi-lane road, and a motorcyclist decided to get cute and drive on a long, thin island (median strip) to get around the blockage. He drove to the end of the island, stopped because he didn't want to drop off it, and found himself next to a stopped police car. Nya nya nya nya na

I haven't seen that YouTube, leeneia, but irony would have have resulted had the motorcyclist been delayed by the policeman (booking him or telling him off, for example) for more time than he'd gained by trying to cheat the traffic. Getting caught for breaking rules isn't in itself ironic.

If you are feeling vaguely unsatisfied
Mxyrzyptlkacine may be right for you. Side effects of Mxyrzyptlkacine are uncommon, and include headache, nausea, vomiting, death, dizziness, Vaginal ejaculations, dysentery, cardiac arrhythmia, mild heart explosions, varicose veins, darkened stool, darkened soul, lycanthropy, trucanthropy, arteriosclerosis, hemorrhoids, diabetis, mild discomfort, vampirism, gender impermanence, spontaneous dental hydroplosion, sugar high, more vomiting and Tardiff disconesia , or vampire face. However by taking Havidol the uncontroled bizarre movements may be diminished but cause discoloration of the hands and face.
In which case you may want to double your dose of Mxyrzyptlkacine.

I think the sense of "incongruity" meant by the MW definition is "incompatibility."

A collapsed souffle' is perfectly compatible with trying to make a souffle'. You may not expect it, but you know it's a not uncommon event.

But I agree that Oxford does a better job of describing what's usually meant by "irony":

"A state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what was or might be expected; an outcome cruelly, humorously, or strangely at odds with assumptions or expectations."

Irony seems like an example of perverse fate rather than a logical or commonplace result.
