I am presenting another workshop on Weds 25th at 4-30 pm, at Whitby Festival online.
I have just received some rather excellent paragraphs from Walter and Mary Lee, to introduce the book. Since she sends her good wishes to all readers, I have included them for you.

Our good friend Nick Dow is the author of this book, my husband and myself are of true Romany stock, and we are very pleased that Nick has compiled this book of songs, which were noted down in late Victorian and Edwardian times.
Some of these songs have been handed down through our families for generations! we would sing these songs spontaneously at any given time, when our families got together, and sure enough somebody would pull one of the old (long forgotten) songs out of the hat, and it would take us right back in time!
It is, surely, very good that these songs will be preserved for posterity, as it would be a great loss to our culture if they were forgotten.
In my family there were singers, musicians and dancers, some played fiddle, some guitar, some accordion and spoons. They would step dance on any piece of board the could find. They made their own entertainment, through very hard times, and good times too.
I hope those who read this book will gain some insight into our culture. Time and space don’t allow me to elaborate further, however enjoy your read, and remember music brings us all together.
Walter and Mary Lee

Cohen and I have just finished some rewrites. Steve Gardham is still proofing. The overall typesetting has been done, but we are waiting for the second fair copy, to make sure there are no further mistakes, in grammar, punctuation, and spelling. We have had to reset some of the Gypsy Fiddle tune titles, without losing our Alphabetical order, which has taken a while, but we are aiming to be able to print by September 16th, all being well. It has been quite a headache getting it correct. I am going to offer MP3 files of the tunes, which need resorting into Song, Fiddle Tune, Carols and Romany song files. I then need to check them all against the originals. Not as big a job as it sounds. There are a few if's and but's however it's looking positive.

Nick...You said something in your final Whitby Video for Secret Stream that I didn't quite understand or agree with.
When you quickly mentioned The New Forest and Gypsy Families from there, you corrected mentioned - The Dow family, but also said The Cole family and mentioned Goliath Cole.
To my knowledge, the Coles had Nothing to do with The New Forest, but lived in and around Oakley, ie. to the west of Basingstoke: and Goliath Cole was born in Baughurst.

Yes it is suggested that his father was born in Lymington; but then Albert Doe was possibly born in Wiltshire...even if living in Bartley, Hampshire when collected from - The Travellers were called Travellers for a reason...They Travelled.

A minor point maybe.....However, I am looking forward to getting the book.

Yes I was working from memory. I'll make some notes for the next workshop, which is Will and Pippa Noble's on Zoom, and then Tenterden in person followed by Edgeworth Festival on the Sunday (!!)
I've spent half my life with Gypsy folk so I don't mind being counted with them even if I am not related! A sort of compliment.
By the way Jane Cole was a tent dweller in the New Forest I believe. She was the matriarch of all the Cole Brothers and sisters. The whole thing was rather mixed up by Alice Gillington, who insisted that the Sebbage family were New Foresters, but Edith Sebbage was in service in Sussex. Like you say they travelled.

It arrived in the post yesterday. Lovely cover. Didn't realise it would have a few tunes in their too - a nice bonus, given I'm a fiddle player.

Some interesting things in there on first read through. 'Fountain of Christ's Blood' is possibly the most grand guignol carol I've ever seen! I hadn't seen that carol before. Strong stuff, I'll definitely alarm a few people down the local folk club with that one at our Christmas singaround!

Also, I don't remember 'Billy Taylor' (William Taylor) being quite so dramatic in the other versions I know - I like the version in here very much. And collected in Witney too, where my other half grew up - a place I know very well.

The book's reminded me that 'The Robin's Petition' is a song I'd been meaning to learn as well.

It's a lovely book - well done and many thanks Nick. Roll on volume 2!

I hate it when the first printed copy comes out, and I discover all the mistakes I missed. Why are they so hard to see on a computer screen, and so easy to see on paper?
When we did the Rise Again Songbook, we got the index wrong, and we printed 10,000 incorrect copies. We sent out a PDF correction sheet, but it was agony to deal with those mistakes. I was intent to not repeat the mistakes of our Rise Up Singing Songbook, but we still made mistakes on the Rise Again sequel - and the index was a complete fiasco.

Maybe that proposed Secret Stream singaround has been withdrawn. I didn't take any note of the day or time or who was leading the session. Today I don't see it on the Camp Harmony schedule https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12jldcYY9h_brhNvp-A9HZP6cusmaSIDmOhW9NFUrdhI/edit#gid=169893150

Of course songs featured in the book would feature at other singarounds.
Camp Harmony is online from 30 Dec - 2 Jan 2021-22. Pre-registration is required and that closes at noon- US Pacific time (2 pm Central, 3 pm Eastern, 8 pm GMT, etc) - on TUES 28 DEC. at https://forms.gle/DPuWTC5FAe3a7crWA

Ah, there is another 2021 book which is the theme for a Camp Harmony singaround. Dick Holdstock is leading a workshop of songs from his book “Again With One Voice: British Songs of Political Reform, 1768 to 1868,” to be held this Friday the 31st at 1:30 pm Pacific time (9.30 pm GMT/UTC)

As I said before, undoubtedly some of the Secret Stream songs would suit other singarounds at Camp Harmony.

I also heard that there is a possibility of having impromptu workshops in unoccupied breakaway rooms and that there will be a bulletin board where these can be publicised.

About 8 hours after Camp Harmony registration was supposed to close, someone emailed me that it appeared to still be open. I don't know the present situation ... if you haven't registered it's probably to late, but perhaps not!
