BS: Clickbait Resistance

Clickbait....What is it?

Clickbait is a concise self-explanatory term for that on the internet which attracts a consumer to click on a link. The motives are primarily financial - the consumer is attracted to a sales site or a site which features ads indexed to popularity for those paid to promote the ads. But motives are many. They can be political. We know now that they can be strategic directors towards disinformation.

They are designed to both attract onto their sites and distract from whatever you were originally after.

They work both by language: "Here's a weird way to-" "You'll never guess how this 90s cutie looks like sh*t today!" "Don't click unless you're able to stomach this erotic instruction" "Eight rules to rid your intestines of black slough. You won't believe number five!" "Kit Kimdishian is into turtles now!"

And leave us not forgot the photographic draws- the weird expressions, the figures that are ever so slightly distorted or manipulated to make politicians look like warlocks and witches, or simply misplaced on purpose to disagree with their captions.

Simply put, any way to draw you in is out there.

I've wasted an entire morning clicking through youtubes on my phone. So I'm trying to create a new habit. Or two.

Easiest to develop is resistance to certain subjects and phrases.

Subjects: Bitcoin or any invitation or mention of crypto currency.
Most of the characters who are famous for being famous. If they don't know me, why should I care about knowing anything about them?
Anything that leads to a commented slide show.

Words and Phrases: Anything current with the word 'weird'
We'll show you how .... Here's how
We'll tell you why .... Here's why

Anyhow, this was stimulated by my own frustration with myself and my ability to waste vast amounts of time on what is effectively angels on the head of a pin issues. Stuff that does not matter, will not help, and disinforms.

How about writing an entire Internet Glossary?

I was going to say this thread would attract spam - though not in the post itself. It may attract spammers to the site, with these keywords. One huge benefit of not letting guests post in the BS section any more is the reduction in spam posts.

Interesting point SRS. I had not given that much thought. Is this something we're likely to see, or something that's going to give you a headache protecting us from?

First and foremost, I suspect spammers are looking for open forums where they can post their crap, and I don't know for sure but a lot of times the threads they choose to post in already have some kind of wording (in an innocent sense) that they follow up with with their porn or smut or sales or whatever. We catch it because in most instances it stands out from regular posts.

Also phrases like "...it's genius!" and "...it's brilliant!" There's also one that pops up here and reads like "Surgeon Shows Way To Totally Cleanse Your Bowels Every Morning! (picture of peeled hard boiled eggs)."

Remember that if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.

Also, the sages of Youtube include mini-shows, from 1 to 3 minutes, and a couple of the techniques they use:

"watch for the surprise ending."

And a really clever one. They'll post an obvious error in the description, sometimes with a garish still photo that may or may not actually be in the video. But self-important viewers will be all over it: "That's a spotted leopard, NOT a hyena!" sort of stuff.

Most of it is Trump speak. "The greatest performance ever", "The best music in history", Beyond Kofefe.

If you hover to the upper right of a video, three gray dots appear. Click on these, and one choice is Not Interested. That leads to why. It takes a few seconds, but clicking on a number of similar videos leads to their being deleted from your suggested videos.

Videos I have got rid of:

Fake confrontations from A&E TV.
Fake animal stories from the Dodo.
Airplane horror stories
Charlotte Nolte, whom I merely find tiresome.
Videos with gross or vulgar words in the title
Something called WonderBot

I forget the title, but there are also a lot of psychology videos with babyish cartoon figures and a cooing, crooning female narrator that I can hardly understand. I got rid of those, too.

I especially dislike the photos of celebrities
in which the photos have been thoroughly tampered with,
whether or not the tampering is obvious.

I think reality is what people don't want to see.
You can't unsee something; like decapitations, Afghans clinging to airplanes and falling to their death, close up images of earthquake victims, Children now dieing from Covid...

I do not respect the "don't look or speak" of the; unkown objects in the sky and seas, horror of war, tradgedy, stupidity...

Instead of the cultural silence I at least give you a choice https://distincttoday.net/2021/08/16/panic-in-kabul-three-stowaways-fall-to-their-deaths-from-plane-and-five-others-are-killed/

This has been a very heavy catastrophe week and has weakened my empathy immunity response. Dealing with one death can be difficult but a response to a potential hundreds of thousands of deaths, executions and injuries has a curious heart hardening effect. Trump speak is a special kind of runaway cruelty that devalues life.

I heard a Trumpet today. Sometime when he was being quizzed on climate change and doing his usual confident knowall denialism and finally when pressed he said:

"Science doesn't know everything"

Stumbling back on topic, I've noticed clickbait for insurrectionists on alt right websites. For example Anti Vaxerette.com or Q Anon hotties gone wild and Inerectionists R Us. My computer blocks ones like Fans Only Militia Milfs.
