Sorry if this is already a thread - searched and couldn't see anything likely.
The Cobblestone pub is in danger; the developers who are Dublin's new lords are larding the city with giant hotels, and one of these is planned to gobble up the Cobblestone.
Folkies have been out demonstrating with music trying to save this haven of traditional music.

There’s quite a long thread about it over on the session.org, a website dedicated to Irish Traditional Music (ITM). It’s definitely the place to go in Dublin to hear “pure drop” ITM, and get away from “Wild Rover” sessions!

It's really a shame this is happening.

To be honest I have never been. I missed the opportunity to take in the place when I was asked to take the piper's chair for what turned out to be the final installment before the lockdowns of the concert series Na Piobairi Uilleann run there,'Session with the pipers', but decided against accepting the invitation. It would be a terrible loss if the venue were to be lost.

I went there in 2006 and played a set of tunes, solo, on my harmonica...I was hoping that I'd be joined...! It is a great place for our music.

This is terrible news. It’s not as easy as you might think to find a really traditional pub session in central Dublin, but we took the tram out and enjoyed a great evening in possibly the most crowded room I’ve ever been in. As we came away, though, I remember thinking that it was becoming hemmed in by soulless modern blocks, and wondered what the future might hold.
If you get the chance to go, it’s well worth the journey (any journey!).

All other things aside, that is one of the reasons I have not undertaken the trip: I hate being in crowded pubs and playing music against the roar of drinkers is not something I enjoy. But YMMV and the Cobblestone should be shielded from whatt is now looming over it, it is an important part of the Dublin music world.

I know it was 15 years ago, a snapshot visit and that times may have changed, Peter, but when I was there, crowded though it was, the clientele were very respectful of the musicians.

Quite apart from the many music sessions, at several levels, which The Cobblestone hosts, it’s been the venue for “The Night that Larry was Stretched” singing sessions for a number of years. Colloquially known as “The Larry”, this has introduced traditional singing to a younger generation than those, like myself, who frequent the venerable Goilin Singers Club! Indeed, the latter institution spent several years in the Cobblestone at one stage …

Guardian article Good to read that the Pub was saved, we lost a great little pub with a public singing session years ago. We moved to 2 other venues - old folkies didn't drink enough in one, then the management of the second took paid bookings without telling us - then to someone's living room ...

If they provided a separate room for the sessions I can understand the pub wanting to sell a few drinks to cover costs. I have noticed in my local that some groups, or rather some members of those groups, seem to think they can attend meetings while putting little or no money over the bar.

Of course some pubs will still welcome groups just to see a few extra people in the place. Every penny counts.

Rain Dog - it was an Irish pub, the owners included a member of a well know Irish group. Our members had a couple of drinks each & food but the pub was near a backpacker hostel & we aging folkies could no longer compete with zillions of partying backpackers. The singer sold his share, the pub changed focus. Today it has a new name & appears to be a comedy venue.

Ah, the Good Ol' Days when Sydney had singing & tunes sessions in pubs!
At least 1 tune session is back ...

I gather there is a good atmosphere at the Cobblestone, but from the aesthetic viewpoint the area looks to me very nondescript (see photo in the RTE news article, link in message from Peter Laban 29 Nov 2021
