BAD MOON RISING
(John Fogerty)
As recorded by Creedence Clearwater Revival

I see a bad moon rising.
I see trouble on the way.
I see earthquakes and lightning.
I see bad times today.

Cho: Don't go 'round tonight.
Well it's bound to take your life.
There's a bad moon on the rise.

I hear hurricanes a blowin'.
I know the end is comin' soon.
I feel rivers overflowin'.
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.

Hope you've got your things together.
Hope you are quite prepared to die.
Looks like we're in for nasty weather.
One eye is taken for an eye.

Thanks, JY. May I suggest, though, that the last line in verse 2 refers to the 'voice of wreckage and ruin'? That's what the Battlefield Band sing, anyway. - Susanne

When I did this song with my first high school "group", we did a little ornament in our arrangement, which was was singing "Baby baby baby baby" after the first and third lines of each verse. Feel free to give it a try, no copyright!

Dear Susanne,

I heard a radio interview with John Fogerty last year, and the interviewer was talking with him about how people hear the words of this song 'differently'. She had him read the lyrics to this song out loud and it is definitely 'rage and ruin.' However, I can understand someone not familiar with the diphthongs of American English hearing 'rage' as 'wreckage'.

Do I take it that the anomymous poster thought that this was a particularly appropriate song for the troubled times Mudcat has been going through the past few days, what with the Healing Track War and that?

Or is it the lunar eclipse?

Or maybe it was the Lunar Eclipse that set us off howling at the moon in such a remarkable way?

A great song anyway, even if John Fogerty spelled his name wrong. (My mother was a Fogarty, and she was a great speller.)

Interesting how this ties in to the copyright thread, since Fogerty couldn't do his own CCR songs for years and years.

When John Fogerty was on VH1 storytellers, he said the some people asked him at concerts, why the song was called "There's A Bathroom On The Right"?

Àine, I quite believe you if you say 'rage and ruin' is what John Fogerty wrote. However, the Battlefield Band definitely sing 'wreckage and ruin' on both recordings I have. They're not American either. Maybe we should tell them? - Susanne

Dear Susanne,

No, let's just let them sing 'wreckage'. What's the dif anyway? Wreckage/rage -- either give the same feeling to the song, don't you think?

Actually, I think it gives a tiny bit more rhythm to the song! Let's file it under 'folk process'. - Susanne

Wish I was back on the Bayou
Rollin' with some Cajun Queen
Wish that I was a fast freight flyer
Just a chooglin' on down to New Orleans

I can remember the Fourth of July
Runnin'through the Backwoods bare
I can still hear my ol' hounddog barkin'
Chasin' down a Hoodoo there

Pretty good swamp music for a boy that was born in Great Falls, MT and raised in Oakland.

John Fogerty was born in Berkely, California (in case there is any confusion.) Rock On!!

Well he spent much of his early childhood in Great Falls. I believe his Daddy was in the military.

I just thought I'd mention that Ann Wilson (formerly of Heart) has a new solo album out and she has a pretty decent version of this song on it. She sings it as a duet with Gretchen Wilson - nice fiddle work too. Gretchen Wilson's own solo stuff is boring as hell but her guest appearances on other people's records seems to indicate she's a lot stronger of an artists than her label seems to want to allow. Her version of Sunday Monring Coming Down on the Kristofferson Tribute CD was really something and now she turns up on this smokin' version of Bad Moon on The Rise.

Cool, thanks for the tip. Such a great song. I like to do it with a little reel in the midst of it, in DADGAD guitar tuning, in D major.

Peace, Mooh.
