2021 Obit: Derek Elliot

Just read the sad news on the Whitby Folk FB group:-(

Derek and Doroty's "Yorkshire Relish" album was never off my turntable at one time and I still sing a couple of songs from it. I only ever met them at their shop in Whitby and they were the friendliest and most welcoming shopkeepers there.

Lifted directly from the Facebook Post-

RIP Derek Elliott... Thoughts and prayers to Dorothy, Nadine and Melody

In the family's own words

"Just to let everybody know, today we lost my husband, our rock, our Dad, our Grandad, our friend.
We just want to Thank everybody that has supported us over the last few years of Dad having Alzheimer’s.

I would personally like to Thank the staff of Peregrine House for their care and dedication to him every second of every day…each and every one of you should be given medals!

He was the best role model a girl could have and I hope you can raise a glass tonight to celebrate his amazing life.

We will give him an amazing send off when organised, I will let you know the details when I can.

Please send me your stories, am sure I have plenty, but to be fair right now, the more I hear the better.

Please share this post…Dad had so many friends, I don’t know where to start!

God bless, Dorothy, Melody and Nadine"

Really sorry to hear this news ~ Derek and Dorothy's club at The King George was a club for chorus singing and Derek's cheerful banter and witty comments kept folk song at the forefront on a Monday evening ~ he was missed in the later years at the annual Whitby ff ~ he was a friend of the late Alan Bell ~ both of them fought in Korea

Condolences to Dorothy, Nadine, Melody and Parky and families
Ray

Such a delightful couple. First came across Derek and Dorothy at the Bradford Folk Club in the late sixties and always loved their singing and light hearted patter. One of my favourite songs they did is Compliments returned. Many fond memories. Thank you for your contribution to folk arts. RIP Derek, and condolences to family.

Derek and Dorothy were a lovely couple. Stayed overnight on a trip up north. Their LP is still a feature of my collection. My condolence to Dorothy and all his family, friends and all who know and love him. He is included in the "In Memoriam" thread.
RIP

A Whitby legend, and one of those people who made the folk scene of the past few decades what it was. People such as Derek are integral to the music we love and I am very thankful to them. My condolences to his friends and family.

I'm very sorry to hear this. I picked up the "Yorkshire relish" lp
on a visit to the UK in 1976 or 1977. Still have it and still enjoy it.

My condolences to his friends and family.

Derek's funeral is on 20th December 2021 at the St Hilda's Church on Whitby West Cliff 11;30am.

There nearly as many churches in Whitby as versions of Barbara Allen!
