BS: Dreams of Music

All my life I have had vivid dreams but this was a new one.

I dreamt that I was at some kind of stadium- far above, an adult was teaching music to a group of youngsters. I paused and listened for a moment and then all of them left but one boy- and a number of guitars.

Instead of taking the stairs to the top of the tier I ducked under each railing as I came to it and finally reached the tier where the boy was.

I asked him if I could play one of the guitars and he nodded yes. So I picked one up and sat down.

Then I played, and it was beautiful. I kept a bass roll going while I played dancing high notes- it sounded like a group instead of just one player. I knew I couldn't play like that.

I looked to see how I was doing it and couldn't figure it out but my fingers kept on. And on. And on. The kid was entranced, and so was I. People kept filtering into the stadium- and then the dream ended.

Anyone else have a dream like that?

Ebbie:

I once had a dream I was in a pawn shop with Woody Allen's saxophone.

True story.

I've had a few dreams in which I was playing beautiful music - once on the sax, which I do not play in real life - but, try as I might, I could never quite recall the music in the morning.

Once I had a dream in which my parents were dancing together, dressed in some kind of Central European peasant garb, to a fiddle tune that was in the air. I did recreate that tune in the morning, and was very pleased with it ... but I started to get this nagging feeling ... then, with some poking around, discovered that it was the Princess Reel, which I didn't play, but obviously had heard ....

One of my brothers at one point was in training to be a concert pianist - and he had a dream that he was on stage performing some Bach; he looked into the audience, and there was Bach himself sitting in the front row, frowning and shaking his head. My brother soon decided to take his music career in another direction.

Last night I dreamt I went into a folksy music store somewhere in the western US, and it turned out it was run by a denizen of another on-line music forum I follow, and several members of that forum came and went - mostly ignoring me, just as on the forum. There was some music in that dream, but I can't recall it now ....

Love music dreams! Once in awhile I 'hear' an entirely new tune and remember it when I wake up but it eventually fades away. I did recreate one phrase of it on the guitar one time but couldn't remember the rest of it.

Does Woody Allen have a sax? lol.

Not music, but when studying a foreign language I always feel real progress is being made when I start dreaming in the new language.
Of course, in my dreams, nobody uses words I don't know!
I should start working on my xylophone. Progress would be dreaming I played something... Successfully.

Not in my dreams- but I have noticed that when I'm driving or when there is white noise in the background, my right ear hears music. Sometimes it's a group or an orchestra or a solo artist. I can even make it go back and repeat an unclear phrase.

However, I have noticed that if I don't know the words, they don't either!

Mrrzy, the brain is a wondrous thing.

If Woody Allen was there would it have been a porn shop?

Yes, I used to record my dream. And try to interpret them. I predicted my divorce, but didn't understand at the time. Now................

I don't remember dreaming music, but I often wake up with an original bit of music in my head - usually short, perhaps 3 or 4 measures. If I don't go to the computer and write them down immediately, they are gone forever. After breakfast is too late. I think these pieces of music dwell in a mental state in between sleeping and true wakefulness.

I used to have "flying dreams" when I was first getting into John Coltrane's music so long ago. I'd be wailing on the tenor sax while the guys in his "Classic Quartet" were providing the groove, sometimes glaring at me and sometimes nodding in approval. As long as I kept believing I could do it, I could, in the dream anyway. I fought off the urge to get a used tenor and stuck with the guitar.

I always thought the clarinet was Woody's axe, he and Marshall Brickman had a regular gig in a bar in Manhattan playing jazz.
