At one such event, a young African-American woman came forward, and Angelou -- I forget what term she used -- knew instantly from the clothing that this was a very young sex worker. "Lady," the woman said to Maya Angelou, "I want to tell you something. Your book gave me hope." The book was I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. |
