The late poet and civil rights activist, Maya Angelou, becomes first African American woman to appear on a US quarter dollar coin.

"The mint's program will issue 20 quarters over the next four years, honouring women and their achievements in shaping the nation's history."

I remember a Maya Angelou interview when the topic was
signing books and talking with readers.
At one such event, a young African-American woman came forward,
and Angelou -- I forget what term she used -- knew instantly from the clothing
that this was a very young sex worker.

"Lady," the woman said to Maya Angelou,
"I want to tell you something.
Your book gave me hope."

The book was I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
