14 Jan 22 - 08:42 PM (#4132352) Subject: Obit: Ashling Murphy, Shane O'Connor Lunny From: Thompson Ashling Murphy, primary teacher and promising musician who played fiddle at local events, was murdered on Thursday while out on a run by the Grand Canal in Tullamore, Co Offaly. Vigils have been held all over the country, in every town and city including huge ones in Dublin, Limerick and Belfast, with traditional musicians celebrating Ashling's life, including her friends playing impromptu before the Dail. The Late Late Show, RTÉ's Friday night chat show, was a wake, with a circle of musicians playing and singing traditional songs and sean-nós, while her fiddle sat silent on an empty chair in the circle. It was particularly poignant in a week in which Sinéad O'Connor and Dónal Lunny were mourning the death of their seventeen-year-old son. |

15 Jan 22 - 10:09 AM (#4132411) Subject: RE: 2022 Obit: Ashling Murphy (Co Offaly) From: Felipa Ir isn't yet known who assaulted this young woman, but the working theory is that she was the victim of a random attack by a person she didn't know. The police have interviewed a couple of suspects, and say they are making progress in their enquiries. I know the first person to be held has been released and is no longer a suspect. |
15 Jan 22 - 10:52 AM (#4132420) Subject: RE: 2022 Obit: Ashling Murphy (Co Offaly) From: Thompson Ashling's killing has aroused a dormant rage among Irish women about the level of male violence in the country. One figure going around is that if you went to a one-hour vigil for each woman killed by a man in Ireland since 1996 you'd be on vigil for a fortnight. |
