Songs about Harwich

Some of you may remember my LOUD red haired younger daughter. Anyway, she married a few years back. Husband is a drummer and producer of musique concrete. They now live in Harwich, and would like to expand the manifestations of the Harwich shanty festival. What they have in mind is to take existing songs and produce them with iconoclastic means. Shades of Walksboutsverse and his kaoscillator.   So they want songs about Harwich. Preferably folk songs within the Karpeles definition, other than that the older the better, Broadsides permitted. Music hall songs permitted.

Oh the worst old ship that ever set sail,
Sailed out of Harwich on a windy day.....

The Collier Brig

Look for Bob Roberts' repertoire. Spare Hands rendition is on our 3rd album 'The Ballad of Dead Bod'. We sang it at a gig in Barton last night.

Also not trad but we have a new song in our repertoire written by Paul Davenport for us, called 'St Pauli Girls' which has the verse...

From Lowestoft and Lynn, from Harwich and Hull,
We plough the North sea with our holds jam-packed full,
It's the oldest of trades and it's kept Britain strong,
And the Dutchmen and Germans have helped us along.

Chorus
And we'll roll down the Reeperbahn, roll,
Be the wind foul or be the wind fair,
Yes we'll roll down the Reeperbahn, roll,
Wi them St Pauli girls and their long golden hair.

The Codbanging Song

One verse collected in Harwich, Essex by Ralph Vaughan Williams, as sung by Charles Benham, April 1904. One verse - the same one, I assume - was also collected from his nephew Hervey Benham, who said, "This song was popular in East Anglia and was sung on arrival with a full ship at Harwich." Additional verses from Bob Hart of Suffolk. A.L.Lloyd noted; In Bob Hart's version, a stanza - the one about the 'big barque ship' - has wandered in from 'The Dolphin'.

1. Come, come my lads and listen here
A fisherman’s song you soon shall hear
What I did and undergo
When first I went a cod-banging O
Chorus
To my lal fol the day
Riddle all day
This is the smacksman’s life at sea

2. How well I remember the fourteenth of May
A big barque ship she came our way
She came our way and she did let fly
And the topsail halyards they flew sky high
Chorus

3. And now we draw near Harwich pier
The young and the old folks they both draw near
To see us get our fish on deck
And crack their skulls with a little short stick
Chorus

4. And now my song it is nearly done
And I hope that I’ve offended none
But I don’t think I’ve got it complete
‘Cos I’ve only been in the trade about a week
Chorus

From ESDSS Essex Folk Song Discovery: Coastal Songs
Essex Coastal Songs

The second verse clearly doesn't belong! Here's my verse to bring it up to date;

Times have changed since I was young.
Now cod-banging days are done
Others catch cod far away
Off the cold coast of Norway

To my lal fol the day Riddle all day
An end to smacksmen's life at sea

Graeme Miles' song about National Service - The Shores Of Old Blighty, chorus:

The shores of old Blighty we're leaving behind;
The dock lights of Harwich are fading away.
When we get to Germany how will we find
Life on a serviceman's pay, Oh sergeant,
Life on a serviceman's pay?

...For you dream you are crossing
The Channel, and tossing
About in a steamer from Harwich
(Which is something between
A large bathing machine
And a very small 2nd-class carriage)...

with respect henry, your words do not fit the tune very well, imo more tinkering required

MY approach to writing an extra verse to this song [cod banging] . would be to include the idea of diminishing stocks. MRZY I had to give up tossing about in a steamer it was affecting my eyesight, they say it is a very enjoyable practice in a hot tub

extra verse to cod banging
and now the fish stocks have got so low,
its off to norway we must go.
its follow the the gulls to find the shoals
then one more net and home well go
or
now the fish stocks have got so low
to the baltic sea we must go
a big green light in the net we have
to stop the seals taking our catch

this fits better
Now the fish stocks are so low
to the Baltic sea we must go
a big green light in the net we have
to stop the seals taking our catch

the first verse should be, well the way i sing it
Come, come my lads and all draw near
A fisherman’s song you shall hear
What I had to undergo
When first I went a cod-banging O
Chorus

My old pal Jeff Giddings, sadly no longer with us, used to sing a version of 'A-roving', set in Harwich rather than Amsterdam. The final verse went:

In Harwich town there lived a maid
Mark well what I do say
In Harwich town there lived a maid
I had to run, coz I hadn't paid
I'll go no more a-roving with you, fair maid

THE SHORES OF OLD BLIGHTY
( Graham Miles)

The shores of old Blighty we're leaving behind,
The dock lights of Harwich are fading away,
When we get to Germany how will we find
Life on a few bob a day, Sergeant, life on a few bob a day.

I wouldn't mind either if if were me, Dick. But it's much easier to find him in a search if the name is spelled consistently.

I just like the rhyme of carriage and Harwich...

W S Gilbert was brilliant at those rhymes. There are many examples in the operas.
