25 Jun 22 - 05:56 PM (#4145436) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Steve Shaw We have to be up early tomorrow so we're recording Macca and will watch it tomorrow. We watched Olivia Rodrigo tonight - very watchable, even for a chap of a certain age (*wink emoticon*), but last night I'd watched Billie Eilish. It was my good fortune to record her set, and Mrs Steve and I watched it tonight (so my second time!) Well, no comparison. Olivia was nice and poppy and lovely, but Billie Eilish is a class apart. She's precisely the kick up the backside that popular music has needed for decades. Brilliant. |
25 Jun 22 - 08:08 PM (#4145447) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: GUEST,Joe G An Astonishing set by McCartney - 2hrs 40 in and still going! What a band! |
26 Jun 22 - 04:13 AM (#4145473) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: GUEST Incredible performance which seemed to be uniting all ages in appreciation of those great songs. He must have been absolutely exhausted by the end - the band was incredibly good as well. Only criticism perhaps flying David Grohl and Bruce Springsteen in for cameos after Greta Thunberg's speech? Glad I didn't have to go back to a tent though. |
26 Jun 22 - 04:14 AM (#4145474) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Acorn4 Sorry that was me - cookie went AWOL. |
26 Jun 22 - 06:12 AM (#4145475) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: GUEST,Henry Piper (of Ottery ) Sadly MCartney's voice (at 80 !!) ) is no longer what it used to be but you have to admire the stamina anyone who could handle a nearly 3 hour performance at his age. I agree the band was superb, professional and well drilled, even down to the Choreographed Brass section !! , can anyone Identify the other Musicians ?? apart from the imported "Guest stars" !!!. |
26 Jun 22 - 06:21 AM (#4145477) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Bonzo3legs You mean Paul McCartney's set was interrupted for a speech from that thunberg brat???????????????? |
26 Jun 22 - 06:32 AM (#4145478) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Bonzo3legs The BBC are really dragging their heels about putting the PM set on the iplayer, so I can download the full HD version. |
26 Jun 22 - 08:31 AM (#4145483) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Backwoodsman I was travelling home from an afternoon/early-evening gig I’d been playing with the band in Buckinghamshire, and the A1 was closed north of Stamford, so a long diversion through Oakham and Melton Mowbray to rejoin the A1 at Grantham, and then onwards to my home, meant that I was able to listen to most of Macca’s show. At the age of 80, it’s hardly surprising that his voice has gone to a great degree but, whereas many (most?) ageing singers drop the keys of their songs to suit their loss of upper-register, McCartney refuses to do that, and performs them in the keys he sang them in as a young(er) man. That, in itself, is an amazing feat, but to do so for an entire, almost-three-hour, high-energy set is astonishing, and would put many (most?) of the younger performers to shame. Backed by his superb, tight-as-a-nut band, Macca’s show was a tour-de-force. Immense power, brilliant (goes without saying!) songs, roared out by the absolute, consummate professional - I am completely in awe of the man, his catalogue, his performance talent, and his musicians. He’s the Full Nine Yards. The usual disclaimers apply - IMHO, YMMV. |
26 Jun 22 - 10:14 AM (#4145492) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Stilly River Sage There was an 80th birthday thread started about 10 days ago. But look at the grouped topics at the top of the thread and you can see that Sir Paul (or is it Lord Paul?) is a popular subject here. |
26 Jun 22 - 11:02 AM (#4145494) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Steve Shaw Sir Paul. He isn't a Lord. I'm somebody who's really sure he isn't from the House of Lords. |
26 Jun 22 - 01:42 PM (#4145510) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Dave the Gnome I was hoping it would be on iPlayer on demand but it ain't yet so I'm watching Billie Eilish instead. The youngest headliner instead of the oldest! :-) |
26 Jun 22 - 01:44 PM (#4145511) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Steve Shaw A lot of flashing lights, Dave, but spectacularly good in m'humble! |
26 Jun 22 - 01:50 PM (#4145512) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Dave the Gnome I must admit that aside from "No time to die" I didn't know her stuff. I will certainly listen to more now. I usually download and play music in the car so a few Spotibum downloads will be occurring later:-) |
26 Jun 22 - 02:04 PM (#4145514) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Dave the Gnome There is a Spotify play list of her stuff compiled by the lass herself. That'll do me. |
26 Jun 22 - 02:09 PM (#4145515) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Backwoodsman Not impressed, not at all. Sorry! And I wish they would pronounce her name properly! |
26 Jun 22 - 02:58 PM (#4145518) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Dave the Gnome I have no idea how it should be pronounced and as long as she carries on performing like that I don't really care :-) Sadly, when it finished, I went back to BBC live and was disappointed by Diana Ross. Still, I don't suppose that would bother her :-( |
26 Jun 22 - 03:28 PM (#4145526) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Backwoodsman Yeah, it’s ‘each to his own’ Dave - I certainly ‘get’ that, I just don’t ‘get’ BE (and I very much doubt I’m her target audience, so it’s really not surprising!). But if others do ‘get’ her, all power to their collective elbows. I’ve just realised - I’ve become my dad (memories of him telling me of Elvis, Buddy and, later, The Beatles and The Stones, “That bloody racket’s not music!). |

26 Jun 22 - 07:27 PM (#4145556) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Steve Shaw Well we recorded the whole thing on Saturday night and we've just finished watching it. Not only was it the best gig I've ever seen on telly, it was the best THING I've ever seen on telly! |
27 Jun 22 - 06:14 AM (#4145595) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Acorn4 Always thought Cliff was the one with the painting in the attic but Paul definitely gazumped him here. |
27 Jun 22 - 08:01 AM (#4145606) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Bonzo3legs I downloaded his set in full HD seconds after it was put on the iplayer last night, possibly the first on the planet to do so!!! |

Take a look at the comments under any recording from the '60s or '70s on youtube, and you'll see any number of pronouncements to the effect of, "Now that's real music! Not like that noise the kids are listening to nowadays!" How a guy (and it's always guys) can say something like that without hearing his father, a grouchy teacher, or some random opinionated middle-aged stranger from his youth, I don't know ... even if I agree with sentiment ... ! |
27 Jun 22 - 05:28 PM (#4145673) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Dave the Gnome Trouble with iPlayer is that the download goes when it becomes out of date. I converted the stream Bonzo linked to an MP4 using VLC and it is now happily on my media server for viewing whenever :-) |
28 Jun 22 - 03:57 AM (#4145708) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Dave the Gnome Anyone seen Alison Krauss and Robert Plant yet? |
28 Jun 22 - 04:49 AM (#4145712) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Backwoodsman Yep. Disappointing sound (true of pretty much everything I’ve seen - they just don’t seem able to get a good balance for TV, and it all sounds as though it’s coming down an echoey tube), and Alison’s vocals weren’t loud enough (Plant leaves me a bit chilly, but I’m an enormous AKUS fan). They were good, I love their music, but I can’t help but feel they were let down by the sound, at least as far as TV was concerned - they may well have sounded great in the flesh. |
28 Jun 22 - 08:37 AM (#4145722) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Bonzo3legs I think you need to turn up the sound to deafening!! |
28 Jun 22 - 09:20 AM (#4145727) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Steve Shaw I didn't think that the sound level balance between the band and the singing was ideal in the McCartney gig, at least not on my recording. And Bonzo, you can't change the balance just by cranking up the volume! I did it anyway (lack of near-neighbours has its upside...) |
28 Jun 22 - 10:46 AM (#4145739) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: GUEST Yes you can, speakers and human ears tend to be more responsive to mid frequencies at higher volumes. |
28 Jun 22 - 11:02 AM (#4145740) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Backwoodsman ”I think you need to turn up the sound to deafening!!” No. It’s a widely-held fallacy that music needs to be very loud to sound its best. At high volumes, ‘deafening’ as you put it, subtleties and nuances are lost in the overall ‘mush’ that over-loaded ear-drums perceive. Having played in bands (of almost every kind, jazz, brass, and classical being the only kinds I haven’t played) for the past 60 years, and still doing it, I prefer to hear well-balanced, technically excellent audio at sensible volumes. Also, I live in a semi, I’m a considerate human being, and I don’t choose to inflict my tastes in music on my very good neighbours. |
28 Jun 22 - 12:43 PM (#4145741) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Steve Shaw You haven't got my ears, Guest (Bonzo?) |
28 Jun 22 - 01:45 PM (#4145743) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: MaJoC the Filk Guest seems to be making the same mistake as producers of pop CDs. Half the point of the CD is that it gives a greatly increased dynamic range compared to the LP, without having to use as much compression to raise the quiet bits above the noise floor. Sadly, pop producers got into a loudness war AND TRIED TO OUTSHOUT ONE ANOTHER, by essentially putting the digital signal through a mincer JUST BECAUSE THEY COULD, and all bands ended up sounding like the same mincemeat with different brand names. Happily the delusion seems to have abated somewhat since the Noughties, and bands can sound like themselves again (unless they wish not to). But I still find myself seeing "digitally remastered" on CD covers and misreading it as "digitally denatured". .... If you really must punish your eardrums, use headphones. Just don't make my mistake of trying to sing along with it: if you can't hear yourself, you'll sing flat, which is even less neighbour-friendly. |
28 Jun 22 - 10:13 PM (#4145804) Subject: RE: Paul McCartney at Glastonbury From: Hagman For Henry Piper (of Ottery), who asked above who was in the Macca band... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_McCartney_Band I guess playing together for 20 years makes an ensemble either very jaded or in this case very sharp.
