Does anyone out there have the lyrics to a song "Following the old 'oss through the town" referencing the Padstow (Cornwall UK) Hobby Horse??

Thanks

Well, it depends which one. I think there are several. Tony Cuffe has written a great song by that name, based on the Padstow Mayday pageant. I've even written a brass arrangement for it in connection with a Mayday event in Norway. But there is a traditional song of the same name, I think. If you want the Tony Cuffe song , I'd be pleased to mail it to you.

Noggin,

The composer's name I have is Tony Deane. Does this ring a bell?

We're following the old 'oss round the town
We're following the old 'oss Padstow round
All on a bright May morning
All on the first of May

Thanks

Nogbad

You're dead right. It was Tony Deane, not Tony Cuffe. I heard it first on a CD by Chris Wood and Andy Cutting - is that where you heard it too?

Anyway, here's the complete text:

Here's adieu to winter's wailing.
From now on it's plain sailing.
Summer is a coming today
As we welcome the first of May.

(Chorus) And we're following the Old 'Orse through the town.
And we're following the Old 'Orse Padstow round.
All on a bright May morning
All on the first of May.

And we'll rise in the morning early
And remember John and Charlie,
By the Golden Lion we'll stand and greet
The Old 'Orse on to the street.

And we're following...

And there'll be no cries nor cribbin'
We're not wear blue ribbon.
It's the Old Red Horse and a crate of beer
That brings us our good cheer.

And we're following...

And we'll sing from morn till nighttime.
For our song it's the right time.
Early in Padstow will you hear
The day song loud and clear.

Thanks Noggin, I shall sleep easy now.

I have heard Chris and Andy sing it as well as a local in a folk club.

What does the line: "We're [We'll ?] not wear blue ribbon." mean?

The Red Horse (and a crate of beer) traditionally made up the May day procession. However, some years back, the blue horse was introduced in an attempt to moderate the proceedings, although it was unsuccessful and there are now two horses and two sets of followers

Don't they still have the children's 'osses as well. Both the Old (red) and Temperance (blue) used to have one, which brought the total up to four.

I wonder how long it'll be until there's a Rick Stein 'oss.

Is there any kind of identifiable tune?

Try the Tony Rose version on his album 'Bare Bones' for a brilliant rendition.

Gallant Hussar/ Black Joke -Bold Sir Rylas-George Collins-Rye Tither-Tom Barbary-Long-a-growing - Cirencester Fair- The Deerhurst Serpent-John Blunt-Freddie Archer-Limbo-House Carpenter-Stow Fair

---a pretty specialised and lesser-known "Tom Goblin" collection indeed !!

Tony Rose sang "Remember Merv and Charlie", referring to Melvyn Vincent and Charlie Bate - no idea who Jack might have been.

Noggin, Below are Tony`s original lyrics.

Here`s adieu to winter whaling.
From now on it`s plain sailing.
For the summer is a-come unto day,
As we welcome the first of May,
Ch.:- When we`re following the Old Oss through the town.
When we`re following the Old Oss, Padstow round.
All on a bright May morning.
All on the first of May.

And we rise in the morning early,
To remember Merv and Charlie.
By "The Golden Lion" we`ll stand to greet,
The Old Oss onto the street.
Ch.:-

And there`ll be be cries or cribbin`.
We`ll not wear the Blue Ribbon.
It`s the Old Red Oss and a crate of beer,
That`ll bring us our good cheer.
Ch.:-

And we`ll sing from morn till night time.
For one song it`s the right time.
Only in Padstow will we hear,
The Day Song loud and clear.
Ch.:-

So good men don`t ignore us.
Join in the May Day chorus.
Dance with the Old Oss, It`s no sin,
To watch the summer come in.
Ch.:-

"Merv" refers to Mervyn Vincent and "Charlie" to Charlie Bate.
As you can see there is no Jack in the song

I've a few little differences from Guest John's set - and some details of my bit of paper seem to indicate that it was copied from a written or printed source, not transcribed from audio. Most of them are fairly insignificant, but for what it's worth . . .

(Sorry - can't find any way to underline the actual differences!)

V1 - winter's wailing (did they go whaling from Padstow?)
    - summer is a-coming today

Chorus And we're following (throughout)

V2 - And we'll rise . .
   - And remember Merv . .

V3 - And there'll be no cries . . (important, that one)
    - It's the Old Red Horse . . (why "horse" when I have "'oss" everywhere else? - makes me think it was Cut-and-Pasted)

    - Will bring us . .

V1    Tony wrote "winter whaling"    Good for rhyming
      "summer is a-come unto day"
      CH:- "When we`re following......"

V2    "And we rise...."
      "And remember....."          My finger trouble.

V3    "And there`ll be no cries...." My finger trouble
    "That`ll bring us...."

And it`s "Oss" all the way through.

Well Spotted

There's a verse that says:

And there`ll be be cries or cribbin`.
We`ll not wear the Blue Ribbon.
It`s the Old Red Oss and a crate of beer,
That`ll bring us our good cheer.

and beside it on the web site there's an illustration of the Oss.
Finest Kind word sheet
The only thing is, the illustration, although it has ribbons that are painted red, shows an Oss with whiskers and the Red Oss doesn't have whiskers! Whoever drew the picture has taken it from a picture of the Blue Oss and just changed the ribbon colour.
Oops!
