BS: Special election in Alaska

Sarah Palin wants to represent Alaska in Congress, and ran in the primary election,
where she lost to a woman candidate who, if she wins the general election,
will be the first indigenous Congresswoman from the state of Alaska.
Palin is taking her defeat very badly!

I try to avoid reading about that publicity hound but I imagine she's screaming election fraud like you know who would do. She basically uses public office and campaigning as spring boards to reality TV but at this point she'd probably be lucky to catch on with some small town cable access channel in a remote corner of Alaska. Good riddance, or is that just wishful thinking. It's hard to tell any more, they just keep crawling out from under that rock.

We get that sort of little offender over here: the front page of today's New European features a mashup picture of Alexander B**** de Pfeffel being flushed down the pan. Sadly, in the lexicon of lavatories, I suspect that he and those around him are "persistent floaters".

It's making me happy! With Alaska being a red state, you never know. Mary Peltola now has four months (filling out the late Don Young's (More Neil! Less Don!) term to ensure that Palin won't get near the Statehouse.

According to Peltola, she and Palin have been friends for years. Let's see if that really pans out from now on.

Democrat Mary Peltola won a special election (not a primary), and she is now a Member of Congress. She replaces Rep. Don Young, who died earlier this year. Peltola and Palin will face each other again in November for election to a full term.

It's an interesting story.

Palin doesn't understand, and hence doesn't like, Alaska's ranked voting. Seems like a good idea to me, but her understanding of a lot of things seems to palin comparison to DJT.

She lost by 3 points and it looks like trump will will have even less juice by the mid-terms so maybe we won't have to benefit from any more of her "public service".

I believe the state of Maine also has ranked voting.

I got to vote in that special election. Alaska has been an early adopter of Ranked Choice Voting which was used for the special election for a 'fill-in' candidate to finish Don Young's term, and this will naturally lead to an election for a Congressional term in November. I have not heard of Palin crying foul as of yet. What happened was two conservative candidates splitting the vote and enabling Peltola to win.

It is not the first time this has happened. Over ten years ago we had a municipal election where we voted that if a multi-candidate mayoral election didn't have a majority (50% or more) winner, if the leading candidate had 45% or better he/she would be the declared winner. Since that vote was effective immediately we got a Democratic winner who eventually went on for a (single) term in the Senate.

There was a very good public radio background article about Mary Peltola which mentioned that she had 'bonded' with Palin in State government went both were pregnant while in office. Palin has had way more invective to and from the other conservative candidate in this race, Nick Begich.

We've got interesting and good quality Local Public Radio in Alaska.

AK is not as red as you may think. There is a frontier spirit in AK that doesn't look kindly on totalitarian edicts by any color. As long as they keep their oil and gas credits I believe women will also influence a blue recovery.

Donuel, I'm not sure you understand Alaska as well as you may think. Alaska is VERY red, perhaps for the very reason that we/they are frontier-spirit minded.

In the 'good old days', republicanism stood for less government and the idea of less government is what brought a great many people to Alaska in the first place.

Now, on t'other hand, that doesn't connote dedication to the tRump- once they catch on that he ain't good for them or their ideals they may abandon him wholesale. We can only hope.

Actual quote showing Sarah Palin in action.
=========
Katie Couric: "What other Supreme Court decisions do you disagree with?"
Sarah Palin: "Well, let's see. There's --of course --in the great history of America rulings there have been rulings, there's never going to be absolute consensus by every American. And there are -- those issues, again, like Roe v Wade where I believe are best held on a state level and addressed there. So you know -- going through the history of America, there would be others but--"
Couric: "Can you think of any?"
Palin: "Well, I could think of -- of any again, that could be best dealt with on a more local level. Maybe I would take issue with. But you know, as mayor, and then as governor and even as a Vice President, if I'm so privileged to serve, wouldn't be in a position of changing those things but in supporting the law of the land as it reads today."

--unable to name any Supreme Court decisions other than Roe v. Wade, CBS News interview, Oct. 1, 2008 (Watch video clip)

Sounds like a graduate of Trump University, or at least someone who sued to get her tuition back. I think that's the same interview where she responded "all of them" when asked to name her favorite founding father.

Much fresher material from Palin as she demands that the other conservative in the House race withdraw:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Earlier in the day, Palin called a press conference outside her Wasilla home. She used the occasion to blast the ranked-choice voting system which she said allowed Democrat Mary Peltola to win the special election.

“Nobody understood the convoluted, complicated voter suppression agenda that it is,” Palin said. “Otherwise, Alaskans would never have said, ‘yay, let’s do that.’”

But Palin’s biggest criticism went to fellow Republican Nick Begich, who she said split the vote.

“Nick has until 5 o’clock today to do the right thing,” Palin said. “And if he truly supports the election of a real conservative, real Republican from Alaska to the U.S. House of Representatives, he’s not that candidate. I am.”

Both Begich and Palin spent part of the afternoon at the state fair in Palmer, where Begich made it clear he had no intention of going anywhere.

“Sarah Palin’s first reaction to adversity is to either quit herself or encourage others to quit,” Begich said. “And I’m not going to quit on Alaska.”

Despite the fact that Palin got more votes in than Begich in the special election, Begich said he doesn’t believe that Palin can pull off a win in November.

“Sarah Palin is going to lose again if she stays in this race,” he said. “At the end of the day, Alaskans know who Sarah Palin is and they’re not going to vote for her.”

Not surprisingly, Palin had some fighting words of her own.

“Sorry Nick, I never retreat, I reload. And that’s thanks to my dad who taught me that lesson when I was a little girl and I’ve been living it ever since,” she said.

The Alaska Republican Party has formally endorsed Nick Begich for the seat. In an emailed statement, the Alaska Republican Party wrote:

“Cooperation amongst Republican candidates, is needed if both our endorsed candidate Nick Begich and Governor Palin remain in the race for the November election.”

Doesn't sound like Begich likes Palin all that much! (By the way, robomatic, I could vote for Tom Begich- I like his politics. But not Nick- whassamatta him. These days I don't trust anyone who calls him/her self Republican
)

For the record, Tom Begich is Nick Begich's liberal brother. He is a musician, which is how I know him, and an Alaska state senator. Their dad, Nick Begich, senior, was a Democrat who died in an apparent small plane crash along with Hale Boggs, U.S. House Minority Leader. The wreckage has never been found.

Their brother, Mark Begich, is a great deal like his dad and like Tom. A one-time US Senator and a former Anchorage Mayor, Mark is also a liberal Democrat. I have no idear what drives the current Nick.

I got to briefly meet Peggy Begich, the mother of the current politically active Begichs. Very nice woman.

Meanwhile, apparently in what is left of the partial Congressional term just filled by Ms. Peltola, there are just a few, like 11, actual 'business' days for her to perform.

She's already campaigning for the November election, and so far she looks good in the TV spots.

I wonder if Sarah Palin could be flown to a sanctuary state and treated like an immigrant. Separatists could use a new start. It's better than the reeducation/concentration camps that the Trumpists suggest for liberal democracy types. Camp Greene and Camp Cruz have nice ring.

Sarah Palin started among us ignorant fellow Alaskans as a breath of fresh air. She was a fresh faced female among an old white male elite. She conveyed a kinda schoolmarm Midwest accent with a sencse of nortern bravado before the trailer park esthetic wore thin. A conservative co-worker said she should stay home and mind the kids. And when the scandal broke of oil biz contractor payoffs to legislators and actual mugs and gift items labeled "Corrupt Bastards Club" she came into fuzzy focus as maybe a reformer. Who knew?

She came off as Fix It Girl. At first. People who knew her from her position in Palmer, which is distant from Anchorage in apace and politics, mentioned that her world view was circumscribed, that she had gone after the local librarian for not censuring certain books. For me it was a scandal that blew up out of nowhere a year into her term, where she had tried to get a cop who was an ex- bro in law fired over personal family issues. For more accurate details see Wikipedia. For less accurate but not wrong entertaiment watch Game Change 2012 starring Julianne Moore. Alaskans were quite taken with the sudden starlight upon us when John McCain selected her as his VP running mate. Hundreds of Chuck Norris jokes were converted to Sarah Palin. But hadn't his people been made aware of her instability? Apparently it was a McCain audible. So the actions and personalities of four women led to the election of Barack Obama: Oprah Winfrey, Katie Couric,
Sarah Palin, and Tina Fey.

Since the election, Palin seems to be a proto-Trmp, but in a more trailer-park pamphlet- diatribe manner as opposed to aggressively misquoted Readers Digest mentality. I think she backs him more than the other way round.

Ms. Peltola gives every sign of being intelligent, informed, and being able to bring her background and experience to Congress in a way that can unite divergent viewpoints. In spite of this I think she has a chance.

How is it possible to "split the vote" in a ranked system? Once the "splitter" with fewer votes got eliminated wouldn’t mean the other be likely to get their votes?   Splitting the votes only means anything in a system like first past the post.
