05 Sep 22 - 03:47 PM (#4152059) Subject: Irish sessions in London recommendations From: GUEST My wife and I will be in London this October, bringing fiddle & mandolin. We would like to go to an Irish session or two. I've noticed on thersession.org a huge list of sessions there. If you have any recommendations of favorite sessions, both for quality of music and for welcoming visitors to play, that would be much appreciated. Thanks! -Chanteyranger |

06 Sep 22 - 09:19 AM (#4152135) Subject: RE: Irish sessions in London recommendations From: GUEST,matt milton Whereabouts in London will you be staying? The Session is a very good resource, but it's always worth checking beforehand for the London sessions it lists. There are several defunct sessions listed I think, and also many sessions which are "3rd Thursday of the month" etc - so it is sometimes hard to know if a session is definitely on. I'm afraid I'm more of an English player, but for what it's worth here are the London sessions I enjoy: The River Ale House in Woolwich (Tuesdays): English tunes The Dog & Bell in Deptford (Wednesdays): mix of English and Irish No Frills Session at the Windmill pub in Brixton: mostly Irish tunes, but some English and American (2nd Sunday of every month) I hear good things about the Irish session at the Harrison pub in Kings Cross. I've never been but I like the pub: good food. I think that one might also be 2nd Sunday of the month: check the Harrison's website. |

07 Sep 22 - 04:22 AM (#4152195) Subject: RE: Irish sessions in London recommendations From: GUEST,matt milton I would compare the sessions listed on The Session website with this page by Karen Ryan: https://www.karenryan.net/index.php/irish-music-in-london/where-to-hear-irish-tr I imagine the ones they have in common are a pretty safe bet to still be running regularly. |

07 Sep 22 - 05:13 AM (#4152198) Subject: RE: Irish sessions in London recommendations From: GUEST,Peter None of these listings are curated rigorously enough to be more than about 80% reliable. |

07 Sep 22 - 05:35 AM (#4152199) Subject: RE: Irish sessions in London recommendations From: GUEST,matt milton Actually I did notice that the Session has crossed out a lot of its older listings. And many of its newer ones were updated fairly recently (a month or two ago). I can certainly vouch for the fact that all the sessions mentioned thus far in this thread are definitely still going. |

22 Sep 22 - 02:27 PM (#4153317) Subject: RE: Irish sessions in London recommendations From: GUEST,Chanteyranger Thanks much! We're in SE1, but will go wherever a good session is happening in London. The Harrison, mentioned by Matt Milton, is where we're going for the singing session, btw. -Chanteyranger |
