17 Jan 00 - 10:20 PM (#164466) Subject: cowboy song info needed From: BK Anybody know a practical way to find out if a specific poem by Charles Badger Clark Jr (mainly known as just Badger Clark) was made into a song. Many of you know that "Spanish Is A Loving Tongue" is taken from one of his poems ("A Border Affair"), as, reportedly, were many songs sung out on the trails, by real cowboys from early in the 20th century, but how to get a handle on which ones of his many poems were used as songs? For example the song "High Chin Bob" comes to mind, from his poem "The Glory Trail." This was initially mistakenly identified as an anonymous folk ballad. Aslo, how many, if any, were sung on the silver screen by Hollywood cowboys? I finally have a collection of most of his work and have a notion to look into setting a tune to other poems of his, but I'd like to know what has already been done - as the muse will, on an airline hop, I opened the book randomly and a tune almost literally jumped out of my subconscious for his poem "The Old Prospector." How 'bout it, 'catters, any ideas? (If anyone in the universe would know about this, it's the folks here!) Thanx, BK |

18 Jan 00 - 08:37 PM (#164882) Subject: RE: cowboy song info needed From: raredance Katie Lee of Jerome, AZ was an off beat pop singer in the 50's/60's with several albums and later became a proponent of cowboy songs as the author of "Ten Thousand Goddam Cattle" was a big fan of Badger Clark and another western poet of the same era, Henry Herbert Knibbs. In collaboration with Ed Stabler she issued a cassette called "His Knibbs & the Badger" that included 8 Knibbs and Clark poems to which they set music, along with a couple that were already songs. I saw it when I was in Jerome in 1992. I bought the 10,000 GD cattle book and cassette, but that's all at the time. I do not know if Katydid Books and Music, PO Box 395, Jerome AZ is still in operation but you could give it a try. rich r |

The only two Clark poems turned songs that he knew about were the ones you already mentioned, Spanish Is a Loving Tongue and High Chin Bob. Those were also the only ones listed in a book he has called, Git Along Little Dogies by John R, White. To answer your question, yes, Dad gets into poems. He can still quote reams of them by heart. When he was growing up, he and his father, while working the ranch, would often spend a whole morning conversing in nothing but quoted poetry apropos to the moment. About Katie Lee's book, search out the thread called "From Ms. Katie Lee"; it is an email I received from her and, if I remember right, it has the addy of the org you can purchase all of her books and tapes from, although I think Ten Thousand Goddam Cattle may be out of print now.
