BBC Singing Together - Downloads

Okay, here goes.
I've put a lot of work into digitising my collection of Singing Together (BBC radio Broadcasts for schools)
I've listed sets of these on EBay (recouping some of my costs), but don't want my collection to disappear with me.
I've sent a couple of full sets (or full at that time) to members here. I've now set up downloads on Google Drive, allowing me to direct EBay sales there.
I will also start making these available freely to Mudcat members.
Anyone wanting digital copies of these, just follow the download links in following posts. No charge!

The first post will be for the earliest ones I have, so there will be gaps before Autumn 1950. I will always welcome any booklets I don't have before this time.

Chris, CJB
Thanks for the offer, but I'm filling enough real space with the booklets and virtual space with the scans.

Cheers

No problem Harry.
Perhaps I should be thanking you, as the stated intention of this discussion is to disperse copies so as not to lose this resource.

Hi Nigel,
I've just discovered this thread after an absence from Mudcat. I'd be very interested to see these files in connection with a research project on Cecil Sharp and singing in schools, but I don't seem to have permission to access any of them. Did I miss something or am I just being dim?
Cheers, Brian

Stop Press: It turns out I can access the files after all, if I just keep clicking - I was put of by a 'permission' message that obviously doesn't apply.

Thank you so much for all this effort, Nigel. It will be immensely useful in the research I described above, but has also provoked all kinds of nostalgic memories. So many of these songs have been embedded in my head for all these years, but sometimes it takes a reminder to bring them out. Just wonderful.

Brian:
No problem.
I'll take this message as a chase-up, and a reminder of a fact I've missed. Up until Summer 1960 the booklets include two series of programmes: 'Singing Together' and 'Rhythm & Melody'. From Autumn 1960 'Singing Together' was published separately, originally as an A5 booklet. These have been linked above.
From Autumn 1960 'Rhythm & Melody' was also published separately for a short, 4 year, run. Those are available here: Rhythm & Melody (1960-64)

Also, the next run of Singing Together: Singing Together Autumn 1968 - Summer 1972 These are in the newer format 235mm * 175mm (the same format used for the stand-alone series of Rhythm & Melody, also for most of 'Time & Tune' only ST is in 'portrait' where T&T was (mainly) in 'landscape'.

Thanks for this extra material, Nigel. The very first song in that 'Rhythm and Melody' set is The Watchet Sailor from Cecil Sharp.

Did 'Singing Together' and 'Time and Tune' cater for different age groups or something, since they seem to have been running concurrently?

Singing together was aimed at ages 9-11, Time and tune at ages 7-9
I may get around to making Time and tune available in a similar manner shortly.

Singing Together was a BBC Radio schools series which ran from 25 September 1939 to 29 March 2001, with repeats until 25 June 2004. Its origins were in Community Singing which was considered necessary at the outbreak of the Second World War following the mass evacuation of children
Time and Tune is a BBC schools radio series from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s, covering Music for primary school pupils.

A music series offering children opportunities to listen to music and sing along, with creative suggestions and games to develop music appreciation and skills.

Each school term Time and Tune covered 7 or 8 different songs, built up verse by verse and used as a basis to investigate ways of singing, musical notation and other topics. During the 1960s each term's songs began to be themed around a common subject, and from the early 1970s each term began to consist of a complete cantata or musical story, which children could perform as an end-of-term show once the broadcasts had finished.

Episodes of Time and Tune have a presenter, joined by a children's choir and sometimes professional singers. The presenter talked directly to listening children but encouraged them to interact with the classroom teacher, during and after the broadcasts.

Programmes are accompanied by lavishly illustrated pupils' pamphlets, containing the tunes and words of all the songs, simple exercises and features about musical instruments or related topics. The pamphlets would be referred to during the broadcasts and were essential for successful use of the series. At least three pamphlets have been issued every school year for the past sixty years, and these pamphlets form the basis for the episode guide below.

The series is part of a BBC music course for primary schools, which extends from Music Box for infants, The Song Tree for 5-7 year olds (added in spring 1982), Time and Tune

The series is part of a BBC music course for primary schools, which extends from Music Box for infants, The Song Tree for 5-7 year olds (added in spring 1982), Time and Tune for 7-9 year olds, and Rhythm and Melody (until summer 1964) or Music Workshop (from autumn 1964) for 9-11 year olds. Pupils can graduate from one series to another, learning increasingly advanced topics.

Two earlier BBC school radio music series called Time and Tune for Juniors and Time and Tune for Seniors ran in Scotland during the 1930s, but they were not directly related to this series.

One final download link for this discussion.
From about 1971 BBC started also issuing 'Teacher's Notes' for Singing Together. These were not so lavishly illustrated, but made up for it by including more background information on the songs, and often a full piano accompaniment. They also suggested teaching strategies to go with the series. Initially I wasn't actively seeking these, but they do add quite a bit to the collection, so I've grabbed what I can, and (surprise surprise) scanned them in. They all seem to be A4 (giving even more space) and usually match the school term of the pupils' booklets, but sometimes covering a whole school year (three terms).
