BS: Word of the year

Subject: BS: Word of the year
From: Donuel

Merriam Webster has declared the word of the year to be, drum roll-cymbal, Gas-lighting.

As a former hypnotist I see the mind manipulation nature of gas lighting among cults and political figures has been an important issue.

For years I have emphasized how vulnerable people are to such techniques. The usual suspects have accused me of the misinformation I warned about, It was like shop lifting my thunder.

What has been your word/phrase of the year?
Mine is 'returning'.

Now this is interesting. I just looked up "gaslighting" on wiki. Get a load of this:

"General techniques of gaslighting

Gaslighters have many techniques they use to gaslight their victims such as obfuscation..."

Well whaddya know... :-)

Why are people stuck in the 20th Century in their beliefs and understandings of the modern world? The 21st Century is already radically different in many areas to the 20th. What's holding them back? I know history doesn't exactly repeat but does rhyme, but really...

Hypnotherapy:
Hypnosis can be a boon to treating phobias, depression, stuttering, anxiety and many other conditions.
Hypnotism has been practiced for thousands of years, and for most of that time it was associated with magic, witchcraft, meditation, charlatans and entertainment.
Only in the past century have the medical and psychological benefits of hypnotherapy been documented, scientifically proven and found to be significant. I believe cruel authoritarian primary teachers are significant as well. Psychiatrists owe much of their income to bad parents and teachers.
or is this being eristic?

I always thought that "eristic" meant "an irritating tendency in speech to start every sentence with 'Er...'"

Were I to let you hypnotise me I suspect that I would emerge, if not exactly speaking in tongues, talking obscurantist gibberish...

or is this being eristic?"

Whether it's eristic or not is moot, but it's certainly an assertion that requires evidence.

I think it would make the Mudcat a better place if you just kept to one thread, Donuel. We would then know what to avoid! Some of your posts and quips on other threads can be quite entertaining but this interminable need to have obvious digs at other catters has become tedious.

Let's try to reboot this thread ....

> I always thought that "eristic" meant "an irritating tendency in
> speech to start every sentence with 'Er...'"

I vote for "solipsistic": the tendency for "So" to trip off the lips at the start every statement, which makes it sound as if the first half of said statement has been edited out.

It's actually short for "You haven't been to Stanford, so let me put it this way ....". You can spot somebody who has been to Stanford by the three-second pause after the "So", while their speech centres get reprogrammed for speaking with us mortals (and a very good job they make of it, too .... they've been to Stanford).

Well there's me thinking that solipsistic meant "very much like lipstick."

I've noted an irritating tendency in my posts for starting with the word "well."

Bugger...

"Psychiatrists owe much of their income to bad parents and teachers."

It sounds about right. No telling if evidence is possible.

Succeeding generations can recover from these things. Also from bad psychiatrists. I'm pretty sure that my grandfather made life so difficult for my mother (who was born not as the son he wanted on the third try and just having daughters) that she 1) became a psychiatric social worker probably partly to learn about her own issues and 2) after her mother died when mom was 5, was raised by that angry father and was lacking a number of skills she might have gained from being around her mother. We (her four kids) were aware of these shortcomings as we grew up, and as we look back after raising our own children. It took a lot of work on our parts and basically learning to tell our mother "I don't want to talk about it" and walk away when there was an argument. She kept using the shrinky stuff on us, trying to tell us why we were doing or saying things, and that is no way to try to control your children or to take seriously their issues in an argument.

That said, I think the "gaslighting" term is an excellent one for this year. People finally begin to understand what it actually means as a general part of the vernacular and to see that it has been done on a nationwide level by politicians who have no business being politicians.

I've always thought that less irritating than "So", which is a misplaced part of speech; unlike "Well", which is a perfectly good phatic utterance (verbal Polyfilla). You remember the story of the three holes in the ground .... ?

.... but I cede to SRS and Merriam Webster: "gaslighting" it is.

Actually, he's right on the money. This is Trump's latest inappropriate meeting, "Ye" (Kanye West) and his anti-Semite young friend. Whatshisname. Fuente. Proud of it. (I'm not going to bother to look up the fool's name, he doesn't need any more clicks in Google.)
