There is a Burns night in the town I grew up in (Randolph VT) on Saturday at the local music hall. There's also a Burns supper at some point over the weekend in Barre VT, home to many good Scots quarrymen. Gee, there MUST be something going on in Boston. If not, come up to Vermont (where it is even colder) and see what you can find. I'm sure my Uncle David will be makin' mealy puddings and playing the pipes in Barre. |

Here in the west of Canada, even on a small island, they're planning all kinds of stuff to celebrate the Bard, including of course the adoration of the Haggis, followed by its ritual disembowelling.--I may as well make a plea here for one item that gatherings back home were never without: see if you can dig up THE Burns Nicht song, "The Star o' Rabbie Burns"--a good tune and stirring words, I always thought. Have a good one. Hey--those attending Enoch Kent's bunfight might give him the regards of an elderly exile who remembers him singing with The Reivers in Glasgow many moons ago; his version of "The Bleacher Lassie o' Kelvinhaugh" has long been a favourite of mine. |

Here in Ayrshire (where The Bard was born) Burns Suppers are held around this date but since the best speakers are in big demand the season can last for a few weeks. I'm not a speaker but attend a number of suppers "just to be sociable" and my last date for a supper this year is 20th February. I've known one Burns supper advertised for 1st March so really any time is a good time to celebrate the life and works of a great poet, or in my case it's a better than normal excuse to have a wee (or not so wee) dram. The hostess (and owner/instructor of the local Highland Dance school) of the Dinner tonight came on stage to announce there was some quantity of haggis left over (there always is) and take-away orders would be provided for 5 bucks each. "You'll have to pay me more than that to take some, Cat," I informed her (over the mic). "I'm gonna hide some in your guitar case," she promised (didn't happen... I watched too closely). "And now, in honour of the main dish," I went on to announce, "Our fiddler will perform Niel Gow's Lament for the Death of his Second Wife." And so he did. On another note, my buddy, who was also performing there tonight, went to the dinner (I didn't) with his wife. He had 2 helpings of the "great chieftain of the puddin' race". I came in to get ready during dessert and met him coming back from the cash bar. He wife sent him to get himself a beer because his breath "smelled like poo." I guess that's not actually another note. Was it Billy Connolly who stated that all Scottish cuisine is based on a dare? |
