Jan. 25th, 1769. But if there is a celebration in your town, it might be on a weekend night closest to Jan 25th.

Tony/Mr. Burns--

well i wish I were in Toronto! It is freezing here! At least one expects that sort of thing in the Canadian winter...we went from (unseasonably warm)days in the 60s less than three weeks ago to this nonsense...

here's to hot tea and silk long underwear...

Putting my shameless promotional hat on - as Tony mentions, the Flying Cloud in Toronto is having its annual "Night Burns would have liked" night at the TRANZAC on 23 January. As usual it has been organised by Enoch Kent. As our blurb states

A Cloud tradition! Once again Enoch Kent will be putting together a fine evening of song and merriment in a style that the great Scots Bard would have approved. As usual, Enoch states that it will be a real musical "Stramash" of an evening! I still haven't quite figured out what this means but do come & find out for yourself. Whatever it is expect the usual great time.

So does anyone know what Stramash means?

Oh, the night will also feature Tam Kearney, Ian Bell and I believe Bobby Watt and more(?)

End of shameless promotion.

Cheers Rana

Ah, Barry I did not make it last night!

Sorry, dude, it would have been great to swap some Bobby Burns songs. I was fighting a throat tickle (still leftover from that nasty flu no doubt) so thought I would stay in...I am sure you sang lustily and wonderfully as you always do...

I shall go next week if humanly possible; we will still be in the Burns Zone on the 26th, no?

haggis

I am told haggis goes quite well with those straight bananas you Queenslanders consume.

If anybody in the Wellington N.Z region needs a source of haggis ...Moore Wilsons...or contact me for an Island Bay manufacturer...they are excellent

Hmmm, the 25th is our anniversaty. Somehow I don't think haggis is in the plans. There is a Burns night in the town I grew up in (Randolph VT) on Saturday at the local music hall. There's also a Burns supper at some point over the weekend in Barre VT, home to many good Scots quarrymen. Gee, there MUST be something going on in Boston. If not, come up to Vermont (where it is even colder) and see what you can find. I'm sure my Uncle David will be makin' mealy puddings and playing the pipes in Barre.

Burns's birthday year was 1759, by the way--and "stramash" means a row or disturbance, what I'd also call a "rammy". Here in the west of Canada, even on a small island, they're planning all kinds of stuff to celebrate the Bard, including of course the adoration of the Haggis, followed by its ritual disembowelling.--I may as well make a plea here for one item that gatherings back home were never without: see if you can dig up THE Burns Nicht song, "The Star o' Rabbie Burns"--a good tune and stirring words, I always thought.
Have a good one.
Hey--those attending Enoch Kent's bunfight might give him the regards of an elderly exile who remembers him singing with The Reivers in Glasgow many moons ago; his version of "The Bleacher Lassie o' Kelvinhaugh" has long been a favourite of mine.

thanks for those links to the Burns Supper site; very cool...

Barry;

that church you mention, is it the one Aine Minogue and Robbie O'Connell and others perform in? The one next to the old cemetery? I forget the name but I know where it is...I looked for it in the Phoenix but no listing; maybe the Globe mentioned it.

I would love to hear Tony Cuffe perform; I took a pennywhistle class with him and he has a great sense of humor and a lovely voice.

See you next Wednesday if I don't see you there Saturday! Hey we should plan a Burns Night Song Fest for next year, eh? I am sure the folks in the Club would love it...Minus the haggis of course...

I took the same tin whistle class with Tony Cuffe, through CCAE. Tony is also being featured on WGBH's "A Celtic Sojourn" from 1-2 pm this Saturday, the 22nd. Here's the information on his Burns Night Concert -

Tony Cuffe and Jerry O'Sullivan present songs, poetry, and letters of Robert Burns, and the music of Scotland and Ireland at the Beacon Hill Coffee House, 140 Bowdoin Street, Boston. Saturday, January 22, 8:00 pm. For more information, call 781-891-1497.

Hope to see you there.

Tony's class was fun. I should go back for another one once I get a little better...I try to practice the whistle every day but am not real good about it just like when I never practiced violin in 4th grade...oh, well, at least I manage to sing every day...

maybe i will see you at the concert tomorrow (well i have no idea what you look like but you know what I mean...)

ALthough Burns night is traditionally celebrated on Jan 27th the reason that people "do" other dates (especially in Scotland) is so that the speakers can get around more than one place to speak ( the best ones are in great demand)

Come on guys! this thread has gone on long enough without one quotation from the Bard himself.
Here goes:-
"Conceited gowk! puff'd up wi' windy pride!
This mony a year I've stood the flood and tide;
And through wi' crazy eild I'm sair forfairn,
I'll be a-rig when ye're a shapeless cairn!"

Now what poem does that come from?

this year Jan 25 falls on a Sun, so you should find - or organise - a Burns night that weekend

I'm refreshing this thread now so you have time to prepare, and also to let people who can get to Glasgow, Scotland around that time, that not only have you all the Celtic Connections events scheduled for the second half of January, but also the "Burns International Conference" at the U. of Strathclyde (John Anderson Bldg. 325) 17 Jan.

The conference runs from 9 am to 5 pm, so you'd still be able to go to Celtic Connections events that night. Various topics, the sessions related to song and music are just before and just after lunch. They ask that you register beforehand and the cost - including lunch - is £20, or £10 to card-carrying students. Burns night 1970 there was a party in Singapore which I attended - All the Traditional things with Haggis and all. I finished the night in Intensive Care at B M H Singapore as a result of a motorbike crash on the way home at 2am. If I had been drunk I would have bounced. So
I can remember when Burns Night is without any effort. But where is Frank Charlton now ??

I don't know of any other poet who tells us his birthdate in rhyme. In Rantin, Rovin, Robin, Burns writes:
Oor monarch's hinmaist year but ane (George ll died in 1760 so his last year but one would be 1759)
Was five and twenty days begun (25th January)
So there you have it!

Burns Night

January 25th is the date of Robert Burns birth and I suppose is the official Burns night.
Here in Ayrshire (where The Bard was born) Burns Suppers are held around this date but since the best speakers are in big demand the season can last for a few weeks. I'm not a speaker but attend a number of suppers "just to be sociable" and my last date for a supper this year is 20th February. I've known one Burns supper advertised for 1st March so really any time is a good time to celebrate the life and works of a great poet, or in my case it's a better than normal excuse to have a wee (or not so wee) dram.

"Then let us pray that come it may, as come it will for a' that…
…That man to man the world o'er shall brithers be for a' that."

Played Burns night suppers both last night and tonight. And both a grand time. Folks knew how to have a good time.

The hostess (and owner/instructor of the local Highland Dance school) of the Dinner tonight came on stage to announce there was some quantity of haggis left over (there always is) and take-away orders would be provided for 5 bucks each.

"You'll have to pay me more than that to take some, Cat," I informed her (over the mic).

"I'm gonna hide some in your guitar case," she promised (didn't happen... I watched too closely).

"And now, in honour of the main dish," I went on to announce, "Our fiddler will perform Niel Gow's Lament for the Death of his Second Wife."

And so he did.

On another note, my buddy, who was also performing there tonight, went to the dinner (I didn't) with his wife. He had 2 helpings of the "great chieftain of the puddin' race". I came in to get ready during dessert and met him coming back from the cash bar. He wife sent him to get himself a beer because his breath "smelled like poo."

I guess that's not actually another note. Was it Billy Connolly who stated that all Scottish cuisine is based on a dare?

Aye, Cluin----Rabbie kept me busy too, over the last two days. Had the task of talkin' tae the Haggis Saturday night---and had a sinking feeling in the gut when I "trenched it's gushin' entrails bricht, like ony ditch". A real dud, as so often happens. Nae wonder oor haggis gets a poor "press"! Today, however, I had the same job, and found a real treat of a beastie; to address it was a pleasant duty, and eating it was a joy! One comedic episode---the "toast" supplied for the piper, the haggis-bearer and Yrs truly was---Bailey's Irish Cream!! Something like being handed a bowl of sago pudding and being told to eat yer porridge-----

For the English. Have a Rudyard Kipling Night. Almost within a month of each other. I suggested this in another thread but some had objections on political & racial grounds, so what. Maybe here in the US we could start a Edgar Poe or Mark Twain night, maybe not weren't they Mississippi River scum. Oh, well. Have a great time.
