19 Jan 00 - 06:41 PM (#165471) Subject: Typing special characters-£ÎKË †hÍš From: Bill D there was a discussiom on the "Mudcat Song" thread about the difficulty of using those characters which are not on your immediate keyboard, so I offered to post my solution. So here is some stuff copied & pasted from that thread. "what I do is use a font viewing/editing/printing..etc. program which will show the numerical value of each character,then...on a PC..(not on a MAC) all you have to do is hold down the 'alt' key while typing numeric combination.. " thus 'alt 0131' = ƒ, and 'alt 0223' = ß, and 'alt 0176' = ° somewhere in the Windows bowels is the 'character map' which has the complete list..(I have several font listing programs which find 'em for me) I am using ICFont Lite...free(fancy version also available)(also MAC version!) and The Font Thing (there are several more on that page and also on this page at "NoNags" each is a little different...try 'em! If you need to use a LOT of different fonts, "The Font Thing" will allow you to show several fonts side by side for comparison.

19 Jan 00 - 07:04 PM (#165485) Subject: RE: Typing special characters-£ÎKË †hÍš From: Brendy How do you do these though? Å Ø Æ Á É Í Ó Ú Only joking, but I do know that the fada can be got, on my keyboard anyway, by using AltGr while pressing the key that generates the French Grave accent ò. Of course, you have to type the vowel in AFTER you do the AltGr thing. As for the å ø æ etc? I use a Swedish keyboard with support for the Norwegian language. Fun, isn't it. How do you do the fada Áine? |

19 Jan 00 - 07:48 PM (#165511) Subject: RE: Typing special characters-£ÎKË hÍ From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca There is unfortunately a problem with using those methods of entering accented characters in messages here in the Forum. On YOUR type of computer it would show a character which might be DIFFERENT than that on a different type of computer, ie MAC vs Windows machines. The HTML codes for special characters, or extended characters were created for this specific problem. You can find out about the specfics of ACCENTED characters, by doing a Forum Search on the word(?) HTML. If you need more than just those characters, you can find out about ALL the extended characters and how to represent them using this link About Special Characters |

19 Jan 00 - 08:29 PM (#165528) Subject: RE: Typing special characters-£ÎKË †hÍš From: Mary in Kentucky Thanks for the link, George. Now I have a question about font faces. If we use that tag here at the forum do we have to close it to keep everything that follows from using it? Also, how do we know for sure how it will appear? Does it depend on the font faces available on each viewer's computer? What is a safe script-type font that most people are likely to have? Is there a list of common fonts somewhere? 19 Jan 00 - 09:25 PM (#165554) Subject: RE: Typing special characters-£ÎKË hÍ From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca In most cases, don't change font faces. All in all, you can stick to Bold <B> and the </B>. With almost ALL HTML codes, you MUST put the Closing tag after the affected section. For another type of HTML enhancement to text, you can use Italics, which replaces the B with an I. Also you can combine the two, HOWEVER, you MUST remember to take the Closing Tags and put them in the REVERSE order you put the tags in at the start. For instance if you do Bold and then Italic, then put in the the close for the Italic first then the close for the Bold. Other enhancements are to change colour or size. For that, you DO need to use the <FONT> tag and appropriate closer. Does that make sense? |

19 Jan 00 - 09:32 PM (#165559) Subject: RE: Typing special characters-£ÎKË †hÍš From: Mary in Kentucky Yes, it makes sense. I didn't know that about closing multiple tags in reverse order. But I noticed thosp (or somebody) uses a different font sometimes for his name, and I was curious about what would be a common font for script writing. |
