STYLES
(Mrs Kenneth Larson)

There are styles that show the ankles
There are styles that show the knee;
There are styles that make the old me wonder
Just how much the women want the men to see;
There are styles which have a naughty meaning,
Which the eyes of men alone can see;
But the styles that Eve wore in the garden
Are the ones that appeal to me.

From Songs and Ballads: Folk Material and Old Favorites, Collected by [James] Kenneth Larson in McCammon, Idaho. Undated [c1933], typescript. Tune not indicated.

Any help identifying the tune is appreciated.

There are laws that make us happy,
There are laws that make us sad,
There are other laws that are just foolish,
And then some moe that are just bad
But of all the darn fool crazy notions
of al the foolish laws that we enact,
Sure the gem of the collection
Is a aw making skirts for that.

There are styles that show the ankles,
There are sytles that show the knee,
There are styles that show the disposition,
And some show personality.
There are styles that have a little meaning
That the eyes of man alone can see,
But the style that Eve wore in the garden
Is the style that appeals to me.

Styles (Tune Smiles)

There are styles that show the ankle
There are styles that show the knee
There are styles that have the boys all wondering
Just what the girls are gonna let us see

There are styles that have a tender meaning
That the eyes of men alone can see
But the style that Eve wore in the garden
Is the style that appeals to me

From The Fighter Pilot's Hymn Book. Undated [1958]. This compilation by William Starr was used by Oscar Brand to produce his Wild Blue Yonder LP.

SMILES

Dearie, now I know
Just what makes me love you so,
Just what holds me and enfolds me
In its golden glow;
Dearie, now I see
‘Tis each smile so bright and free,
For life’s sadness turns to gladness when you smile on me.

There are smiles that make us happy,
There are smiles that make us blue,
There are smiles that steal away the teardrops
As the sunbeams steal away the dew,
There are smiles that have a tender meaning
That the eyes of love alone may see,
And the smiles that fill my life with sunshine
Are the smiles that you give to me

Dearie, when you smile
Ev’ry thing in life’s worthwhile,
Love grows fonder as we wander
Down each magic mile;
Cheery melodies
Seem to float up on the breeze,
Doves are cooing while they’re wooing In the leafy trees.

The STYLES is a parody of the above 1917 song.
