Tech: Twitter goes Bitter

The tweeting bird logo is dead. the new logo is X.
Musk has only lost 20 billion. He has 20 more to lose for a total loss.
No more tweeting. What now, X-ing, bleating, threatening?
You get a swastika by adding hash marks to the X.

So that's how they invented the swastika. I did it on my second try, Donuel.

I've done some reading about the Twitter sale, and it's not true that Musk paid $44 bn for it. He had several corporate partners in the deal, and a lot of debt was involved. The people who are hurting are the creditors, not Musk.

So, here's the link to the "X":
https://twitter.com/

I think I liked the little birdie better, but even then I never joined.
I'm still considering Instagram. Should I join?

You curate how you want your account to go on any of these sites. Twitter is where I follow more news and science folks; Instagram is a photo and video sharing site and I share garden, pet, topical stuff that is generally less political than other sites. It depends on what accounts you choose to follow, what content you see.* But right now it's difficult to choose who to follow on Twitter because the authentication activity has been trashed. Start small with known sites and look to see who they follow and build that way. A search on a name is bound to get disparate results and you may find yourself in the tall grass very quickly.

*I take a look at who is following me - and if they're spammers or scammers I block them.

Musk is famous for "starting from basics" but with Twatter he started from a mature, if flawed, product. So paring it back to basics meant paring it back to er, well, very little.

His intention was for "free speech" sans censorship. The problem is that in the real world, free speech implies responsibility, but in reality the broadcaster has to apply that responsibility (aka censorship) and that is expensive, if done!

When you build a rocket or a car you are dealing with physics. When you devise an anti-social media you are dealing with people. And greedy ones at that.

The real scary thing is Starlink. Mr. Musk is working in an unregulated field with all of those satellites.

X is used in computer software as icon for closing a window, or for deleting stuff.

So I ask myself, whether Elon wants to close or delete the service formerly known as twitter ...

It's a ripoff of the Unix X-windows logo from the 1980s:

Whether or not he wants the ex-Twitter dead, MudGuard, it may simply dry up and blow away.

I don't bother with any of it. I didn't need it ten years ago, I didn't need it twenty years ago and I definitely don't need it today. Mudcat is perfectly insane enough for me, thanks. ;-)

Ironic, Sandra, @Nitrozac was one of the very earliest accounts I followed on Twitter. It was all so new back then we sometimes had conversations in the threads. Now they're bigger and doing more fundraising things (patreon) with subscribers away from the bigger platforms and we all have many more accounts we follow to keep track of every one with each visit.

I was wondering if I had to do anything with my existing Twitter account. The answer was no. I woke up yesterday and the birdie was gone. The black X rules. Otherwise my account seems to work as it used to, not that I'm an expert.

stilly, as a cartoon collector I've been following Joy of Tech for many years.

My only contact with twitter was looking at the pages of 2 Oz cartoonists. I just clicked on my bookmarks, but I can't look at either without joining (boo, hiss)

I am not a twitter member but I did used to read some twitter pages. 2 or 3 weeks ago they blocked my access to twitter. I can now access it again but not in any useful way. It does not allow me to see the most recent threads. I cannot work out what method they are using to display the posts now, apart from maybe trying to make me sign up.

I think it may be showing posts with a lot of 'likes'.

It used good for up to date information about delays to local trains and buses. At the moment Southeastern Railway are showing a post about a duck left on a train back in February.

Starlink satellites are being used by Ukraine's military [AND US] so the Pentagon wants to buy a number of Starlink satellites so one person like Musk can not pull the rug out on Ukraine.

Comparing Starlink and Cable speed.

Corporate speeds of 500 Mbps is pretty good. Here at the house with cable I usually get around 340 (though I paying for up to 500, but it never is that fast).
