Gas station news - Oregon pumps its own

A law signed by the governor of Oregon now lets residents pump their own gas. I always was surprised traveling through the state that I had to wait for someone to do it for me. Now New Jersey is the lone holdout on this practice.

Years ago it may have made a difference (and people used to cheat - pump their gas then go into the store and claim a lower amount on someone else's adjacent pump - I've had that happen to me before.) But the technology has improved and whether you pay at the pump or go inside and they put X amount on the machine you will pump from, it's much safer. The Oregon and New Jersey policies were probably good for job security, and maybe the gas jockeys did other things like wash windshields or check tire pressure?

Here's a 5-step guide to pumping your own gas
For the first time in 70 years, Oregonians can pump their own gas. Here are some tips for those wishing to try their hand at it.

Time to pump your own gas, Portland

And this one - says you can pump it if you choose. I suspect many of these gas stations will quickly dismiss the fill-up staff and you'll have to do it yourself. Oregonians can now pump their own gas — if they want to

Oregon is like a time capsule back to the 1960s or 70s.

There is a requirement in the bill to have an attendant at each station:
She noted a complaint-based enforcement process written in the bill that places "the onus on impacted individuals" to report violations and an unclear enforcement process once a complaint is made. Kotek added that widespread violation of the required attendant provision would undermine the intent of the bill.
.
In Washington State they used to have state run liquor stores, so unlike many or most other states, you could only buy beer and wine in grocery stores. Costco wanted to sell all of it so lobbied hard to get the state liquor stores closed. I wouldn't be surprised if Costco was behind this move also. They want to do what they want to do.

Almost every petrol station in the UK requires that you fill your own tank, and it's been like that for decades. Whether you can ask someone to do it for you is a moot point, but no-one ever does.

That's the rest of the US also. Oregon and New Jersey were the holdouts, and the reasoning was obsolete and convoluted. Now New Jersey is the lone state prohibiting customers from pumping their own.

You can pay at the pump with your bank card in many petrol stations too. There's been a bit of controversy over that, because the pump "pre-approves" (i.e. sequesters) a maximum amount after it has checked your inserted card but before you draw the fuel, typically £100, which is more than most people would need to fill up. There are stories of unsavoury practices whereby the excess over what you actually spent is not returned to your card for days, weeks even.

Steve, the £100 isn’t charged to your card, only the actual transaction amount. At least, that’s the practice at the two filling stations I regularly use, at our local Tesco and Morri-bobs stores.

The charges hit the credit card in real time now. But hotels will do that (or they used to - it has been years since I've stayed at one.)

The thing about gas stations in the US is to look around for hidden cameras above the payment area or a fake slider within the card slider; that's one way thieves would get the card number and any pin or passcode you type in. The card I use now I tap and there is no code, but the number isn't in view either.

"Card providers to 'reserve' up to £100 when you pay at many self-service fuel pumps – here's what's happening"

Read that article on Money Saving Expert, John.

New Hampshire liquor stores are all stater run, but beer and whine is sold in grocery stores. Gas has been self-serve for many years. I remember reading about one state where self service was allowed, and some folks didn't know how to deal with it. Oregon, maybe? I do remember intending to pump my gad in NJ, and an attendant telling me it wasn't allowed.

Seems like most everywhere is trying to avoid paying people to do a job. It's all about who can make $.

They’ve ‘reserved’ £99 ever since pay-at-the-pump was introduced quite a few years ago where I live, Steve, and I understand the reason for that practice. But I’m an inveterate on-line account checker/reconciler every couple of days (must be something to do with being an accountant in my past life) and I’ve never seen £99 charged to my card/account followed ‘days or even weeks later’ by a credit for the difference between £99 and the actual charge, only ever the charge for the actual purchase amount.

Song reference: Dan Bern's "No Missing Link" refers to "How else explain 'pay at the pump'.

Most people I know always put the same number of cents on their gas purchase as an identifier.

The interesting anomaly in Oregon's attendant-pumping experience is that even though the stations had to pay an attendant to pump your gas, Oregon's gas prices were ALWAYS lower than that of neighboring states. I kind of liked it- not only did you not get your own hands or clothing smelly or smeared but you were aware that it was an entry into the jobs world for young people. Kind of like McDonald's today.

Watch. Oregon's pump prices will soon, if not already, rival those of California and Washington and Idaho....

More than half of the price of petrol in England is tax. Presumably this helps pay the dole of those who would have been attendants in petrol stations ....

I miss the option of full-serve.
