Info Req Re: 'Mystery' Flamenco Guitar

I have a flamenco guitar that was given to me about 15 years ago and I'd like to know a little about it. It was made by Greco Guitars, Inc., Model No. GR 124. If anyone knows anything about this guitar or the company that made it, I'd really appreciate the information.

If it's any help, this guitar is about 25 years old.

Áine, you might be able to find some info at this place: Flamenco Guitar Site with tons of links

I'll keep looking.

Aine, sorry to be so long in posting to your query, but I wanted to have something to offer....and after checking out a few things, and wracking my (very subjective) memory, I haven't come up with much. What I'd like to be able to ask is, does it have a "Ramirez style" headstock? or "Ramirez bracing". I'm tending to think it might be a Japanese import, as I've seen the "Greco" label several times...but only on steel string imports. If you wanna give me a call at 416-690-8697, I'll be around all day (Sunday) and maybe you can describe some of it's innards. The problem is, that often guitars were given different labels in the different countries they were distributed in. (much like cars) As an example, most "Goyas" that I saw in Europe, were called "Levin". Many Stella instruments that reached Canada in the 1920s and 30s, were only labeled "Peete Musical Instrument Company", which was only the distributor. Sorry I can't be more help.

Rick

Oh, does it have a cedar top?

Glad to see you on here Rick. I told her last night that you would know something! I forgot to mention that the ONLY info I could find anywhere on the Internet was a discussion psoting that said Grecos were made in Japan; sounds like that meshes with what you've heard too, maybe?

Yup Kat, on the other hand it might be some small company that only operated for a couple of years and then saw the folly of starting a guitar company. If it's Japanese it's monetary value might be 50 bucks, if it's handmade it could be a thousand. Important thing is: do you like it? Then it's worth everything.

Thank you, Rick and kat! Rick, I'm waiting for the dear hubby to get back from the laundromat to call you. He can probably describe the guitar better than I can. I very much appreciate your help with this!

And mehitabal -- that was a cool link you sent me, woman!

From: GUEST,Rick,,,at my friend Greg's.

Greg is at the stage where I was a year ago vis-a vis computers, In other words he's a Luddite. I can hardly believe that I am actually showing someone else ANYTHING to do with modern technology. On the other hand, he's a fine musician with a wicked sense of humour so maybe he's worth it. We'll be home shortly if you still wanna call. Leave your number if the machine is on.

Dear Rick,

Thank you so much for solving the mystery -- Even if it is a Japanese knock-off, I still love the sound of my little guitar. And you're right, that's all that matters. But, I still think we'll get a new case for it -- the cats have torn the old one to shreds!

Layne and I are working on a new song that I want to use my Greco on. So hopefully, you'll be able to hear what it sounds like on the Mudcat Radio soon.
