Who is Uncle Jack?

Tom Paxton's song "Uncle Jack" is, I believe about an artist who was blacklisted during the McCarthy Era. When I heard Tom do this song at the Main Point in Bryn Mawr, Pa. in 1971 or so, he gave the name of the person the song is about, but I think I was slurping my capuccino and missed it. Does anyone know the story?

In a similar vein, Fred Small's song "Jimmy Come Lately" is about a nationally ranked college basketball coach who chucked it all and went to drive a school bus in Sequim, on Washington's Olympic Peninsula. Fred told the audience the man's name (this time it was in Northampton, Mass., 1985) and I missed it again. These have been bugging me. Any help out there?

By the way, Fred said that he had to redo the entire chorus of the song when he found out that the town's name is pronounced "Squim" and not "See-quim".

If anyone is interested, I can probably post the words to these fine songs from memory, but I'll bet someone can come up with a link, with tunes and all.

Aloha,
Mark

Here are the words to the Fred Small song. Jimmy Come Lately Road and Lost Mountain Road are both on the map.

JIMMY COME LATELY by Fred Small

I pull on the choke, pump hard on the gas
Oh this wheezing old bus is complaining
The Dungeness winter is blowing its last
It's cold, but for once it's not raining
Good morning, Jennifer, welcome aboard
That's a handsome new jacket you're wearing
And hustle up, Carey, I'm closing the door
And I'll thank you to knock off the swearing

CHORUS
And it's Jimmy Come Lately to Lost Mountain Road
The fog on the bay will be clearing
And I'm crossing Dean Creek with a thirty-kid load
And I'd rather be nowhere but here

I can still smell the sweat, hear the roar of the crowd
See the team on the magazine cover
My wallet was thick, the airport was loud
Till the Monday I knew it was over
My back had gone out and I lay awake nights
As I diagrammed plays on the ceiling
All those motel-room calls to my long-distance wife
Made me feel like a junkie caught stealing

CHORUS

I've seen city lights turn a good coach mean
Seen the pressure drive a family apart
I've gone for the glory, I've worn the gold ring
And I barely escaped with my heart
Now, Patrick Delaney, I've seen the kid play
God, he's got the moves and the shooting
And he's already talking about UCLA
While the agents line up for the looting

CHORUS

Now Mary and me we're a comfortable fit
And the ocean here's running with salmon
Evenings we go for a walk on the spit
And on Sundays sometimes we go clammin'
And I still get the offers and I just turn them down
It's a wonder they bother to find me
And I'll leave to Valvano and Lewis and Brown
The wonders that I left behind me

CHORUS

Sorry, I don't know how to post the tune. So, does anybody know the coach's name? Or who Uncle Jack was?
Kat-- it was at the Iron Horse. I was on the staff at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, living the life of misery for a year in East Longmeadow. Northampton was fun -- I wish I'd lived there instead. But then I might not be in Hawaii now...

Aloha,
Mark

Refresh: a year and a half later and I STILL don't know these names or any more about the stories. Any help?

Aloha,

Hmmm...I've just searched a bnch on google for Uncle Jack and not found a thing except that the music and arr. were by David Horowitz.

The Screen Actors Guild has a ton of info which they will share with the interested public. Maybe they could tell you, if no one here comes up with it.:-)

We'll keep looking.

When we lived in Noho I never had the price of the Iron Horse tix...3 kids and a composer/brother used up the cash.:-)

My ex business partner and I called on someone at Baystate once when we were selling specialty advertising products. Ugh, a bunch of plastic junk!

Wow, Mark, I guess there are some questions even the 'Cat just cannot answer. Too bad.

Maybe there should be an award for the unanswerable question. We have awards for trolls and flamers, why not for the difficulty of the question?

Anyone know how to email Fred Small or Tom Paxton? The horse's mouth is often a good source...

As far as I know Fred is no longer involved in music. He has deserted us for the ministery. Of course, he is a UNITARIAN minister but it is still the ministery. Somone has to control the radical Unitarians and keep them from burning question marks on people's lawns.

Naes, PLEASE come burn one on my lawn!**BG**

I see at his website there is a very nice message from him about his ministry and his music. He did three performance this year, but does not show anymore listed after May. With a smile like that, I figure he should be packing them in, either place!

Fred started out as a lawyer, and has always been interested in public service, so I suppose it's no great stretch to the ministry. A very dedicated and talented man. Contacting Tom sounds like a good idea....I'll give it a try. I've asked a couple of other questions that have gone unanswered, so I don't know that it's all that unusual. What IS amazing about the 'Cat, I think, is how many seemingly impossible questions ARE answered, and with such a wealth of associated information.

Aloha,
Mark

OK Kat, you are on! Where do you live. PM me and I will start planning now. It may take me a few years to pull this off but one day you will see it out there burning.

LOL...ole Wyomin' will never be the same. I can just see the headlines
Crazed pacifist says "Ask Why!" in burning question!

By the time you get out here, though, I'll be somewhere come hell or high water, NOT because of you; just don't want to be in WY anymore.*bg*

(Good luck, Mark.)

Don’t know if you are still looking to an answer re: Jimmy Come Lately, all these years later, but I stumbled across this post when I was looking for the same thing. It’s Phil Woolpert https://www.sequimgazette.com/sports/woolperts-legend-lives-on/

Small world to find this post, I live in Holyoke, MA.
