2023 Obit: Chris Coe - December 2023

I have just seen the sad news on facebook from John Adams that Chris has died

Chris Coe was very much a stalwart of the folk scene from the 1970s and a concertina and hammered dulcimer player of note in the UK and no doubt wider RIP Chris

My favourite female singer for nearly fifty years-a dimension beyond in style, interpretation and presentation.A sad time.

There are a lot of posts on Mudcat that have to do with Chris and Pete Coe, about performances and song lyrics. This, for example. And this. And a short review of Chris singing here. We have a couple of "Coe" surnames in the Mudcat membership, but alas, Chris was not one of them.

RIP, a wonderful singer, musician, dancer and teacher.
I heard the news yesterday via a mutual friend but it was under temporary embargo; obviously now Johnny's announced it on facebook it's public knowledge.

This is very sad news indeed. I never met Chris, but know Johnny a little. I of course know Chris's wonderful, important work. Blessings upon her memory and legacy, and deepest condolences to all who knew her.

Oh this is such tragic news. Chris was a key presence on our English folk scene for many years: so genuinely multi-skilled as musician (superb exponent of hammered dulcimer and concertina), teacher and researcher. But perhaps most of all, Chris was indisputably one of the great singers of our age, one of the most distinctive of voices and an important, immersive and inspirational interpreter of ballads in particular. And a warm and generous sharer of her knowledge. I treasure memories of hearing her sing at Ryburn 3Step events over the years (sadly not so much recently due to my own ill-health). She will be much missed.
My condolences to Johnny, her family and all her many friends.

“Inspirational” is an often misused word but not here. She was always meticulous in acknowledging her sources and sang in her own voice. She told the truth and lit a fire under a lot of people in her teaching and by example as a performer, probably many more than she realised. A sad loss.

I was very sad to hear of this on Facebook. I knew her, although not well, and it was always a pleasure to see her, although the last time was a few years ago. Chris was a wonderful singer and player of the concertina and hammered dulcimer, and was by all accounts an inspirational teacher. MoorleyMan's assessment of her as one of the great singers of our age, and especially of ballads, is spot on. Her contribution to folk music was huge, and she will be much missed.

I was sorry to hear this news. I didn't know Chris well but she stayed over when we booked her at our folk club and cooked us a lovely meal as a thank you. I agree with every positive comment written above. I have added her name to the "In Memoriam" thread and send my condolences to all those who know her and love her. RIP Chris.

I didn't know Chris well, but met her on many occasions (often at festivals) and loved and respected her musicianship. She was hugely supportive and friendly, and I have a vivid memory of her dashing up to me at a Broadstairs festival to ask about my song "Moth". A huge loss to us all, as a musician and as a human being. Much sympathy to all of those who loved her.

Chris and Pete played for us in the 70/80`s and were always highly regarded. A very sad loss to them movement.
