About 3 to 400 brand names came from about 8 guitar building factories in Japan (and later Korea and Taiwan) at that time. Same situation with strings. Many folks thought that every brand of strings was different in some way, but the vast majority were made by Labella, Vinci, or D'merle. I own a very well made rosewood guitar with the brand name "Shero" (inlayed in pearl) on the headstock. Even though I'm pretty experienced in tracking down instruments, I've had no luck at all narrowing it down to under six or seven possibillities. Figure it was made in the same factory as instruments labeled "Morris", but that's just a guess. Rick |

From: Jon Freeman Thinking of the brand name bit, I can't remember if I have mentioned it before but I saw 2 identical (except for the badge) in a local music shop. I think one was labeled Epiphone and the other Ozark but there was about £100 difference on the price tags. I mentioned it to my friend who had the shop and he agreed that they were the same and checked his prices and they were correct according to his lists... I think it was that manodlin that we then looked for in the Samick catalogue and found what looked to be the same instrument... Jon |

Your best source for info, is the veteran guys & gals who service the work bench at any good guitar shop like McCabe's in Santa Monica, California. The sound of the 305 I found very nice. The annular rings on the front are closely spaced. I don't think the top is made of plywood, rather solid wood (I may be mistaken). The sides and back appear well constructed. The action has held up pretty well since I have owned it. It came in our family in the early 70's. My sister gave it to me when she got a much more expensive guitar, buy I think it sounds as good the more expensive one. For its size it has very decent projection. Given the time I probably spent less than $200 and maybe more like $100. It says "Guitarra Classica de Espana" on the inside but it also says "Made in Japan". It has a 2" neck at the nut. Much wider than my Fender Jaguar but I was going for a different style and is kind to my fat fingers. Seems to be fretted well and is true up and down the neck thankfully because there is no adjustment at all. It's been through a lot including the '94 earthquake and has held together but I wish it had more volume - although I've always had nylon strings. I just bought a new Gibson banjo and am tempted to buy a new guitar as its mate but the Orlando seems to serve its purpose well enough. Hope this has some value for you. |

My luthier looked at it and said that it wasn't the usual 12 string neck on a dreadnought body, it's actually braced for the extra tension. It has a zero fret and an adjustable bridge(both of which would not be my 1st choice), but strung with Lead Belly gauge strings and tuned down to B and it's a killer. It's a model 337. For under a C-note (if you figure in the cost of the setup and strings)it wasn't a bad deal, I figure. Mark Ross |

It has a cross motif on the headstock, thin, oblong fret markers, and a guild style pickguard. Spruce top and rosewood sides and back......I was just playing some fingerstyle Townes Van Zant and was getting lost in the mellow but crisp tone of the guitar. This is the perfect camping or kick around guitar because it's not worth much but sounds better than most guitars out there, including the higher end ones. |

I have an orlando rickenbacker copy that I got off of the goodwill auction site.Its an EXACT copy of a 330,except it had crappy "harmony" style pickups and a cheesey vibrato on it(ok I guess it wasnt an EXACT copy but the body,neck,2 layerd pick guard, and truss rod cover were exact).I replaced the pickups with some decent humbuckers,replaced the bridge with a tune-o-matic,and put a trapeze tail piece on it. It has a set neck joint that cracked when my drummer knocked it over.When I had it repaired the fix it guy said that there was about 4 or 5 in. of wood after the fretboard and that it was stuck in the body with some shims and a bunch of glue.He reglued it and sunk 2 screws in the top of the body above the neck pickup securing it to the body(I know I cant spell Im a musician and its 4:17 in the morning).After all that This guitar just SCREAMS.I took off the metal orlando name plate at the top of the headstock and had a friend make some ric style vinyl stick on letters for the truss cover.So now its my WRECKENBACKER.Check out my myspace page to see some pics of it(myspace.com/superbeatle)There are also some pics of it on my bands website(thetwerps.com).Enjoy.Robbie Cadwell. |

It became my first professional guitar as I used it playing in a few bands making a few bucks as a kid. I used it until Xmas of 1975 when I finally got my first real Gibson Les Paul. I then sold the Orlando to a friend who liked it and have regretted it ever since. Luckily, I found an Orlando Les Paul on Ebay, exactly like the one I had and realized they weren't too bad for being a copy. Plus it brought back a ton of good memories. I wish there was more info on the guitar and the company that made them. |

He was a student of Pepe Romero and a fine musician. He was very keen on the Orlando for its tone, volume and playability. I still play it and love it. No defects at all. It is a double cutaway with arch top electric, no 335 style block, but a sound post at the bridge. I found a picture of a Univox guitar circa 1968 that was a 335 clone that had the exact same pickup selector switch plate and pickups. But, it's got Orlando inlaid in pearl on the head, two dials for volume, two dials for tone, and a switch for either rhythm or treble. It's 6 strings and the body and neck are made from some really dense dark wood (red in color, mahogany perhaps?). Very well made, I'm looking for some knobs which were missing. Reading the thread, seems Orlando was responsible for both electric and acoustic guitars. I'm no expert on electrics but this one looks like a Les Paul copy. Anyway, it needed help, so I bought it, and it is now part of my collection of assorted stringed musical instruments. For anyone local to Los Angeles, I have found the Pasadena swap meet on the first Sunday of the month always has a few interesting instruments, I seem to find something every month, much to the wife's displeasure! |

The white plastic strip at the end has chipped off causing the first string to sit right on the wood (near where you tune the guitar). Does anyone know where I could get parts for this guitar? Australia I have an Orlando Les Paul Custom copy that is really knocked about but sounds great ( modern Asian copies just are not close )and plays very well. It is Old!! and needs a refret. I took it to an extremely reliable and knowledgeable guitar repairer in Brisbane and he said that it had all the characteristics of the early Ibanez copies from the Hoshino Gakki company in Japan. That is all I've been able to find out about Orlando guitars. He said that it is highly likely that some USA importer just had the Japanese guitars rebadged to sell through his/her particular distribution network. Probably the business people involved are long gone taking their history with them - an interesting thought for some research. I nearly didn't buy it ( in 9/06 when I found it going very cheap ) but now I'm really glad I did. I hope some guitar lover finds out some more. Let's hope music brings more people together. Somebody totally butchered the body to install some humbuckers who were lose. I took the p/u off and saw they were Gibson T-Top worth around $600.00.....can't wait to get the guitar back from Carruthers. The body is a little thinner than the normal telecaster, a nice cream color, the neck is a three piece neck (maple?)with a rosewood fingerboard. Love Craigslist.... |

I paid about a hundred and twenty five dollars for something that looked like a D-28. It always sounded and looked great. I did not care for the slightly curved fretboard or the high end action, though, and replaced it with a rare Martin D-21 in 1983. I then gave it to my nephew who still plays it today. Subsequently, I have added a Martin 0018V and a 1966 Martin 0016C to my collection. But I fondly remember the happy hours learning to play on the Orlando. |

The comments regarding the manufacturing of guitars in Japan circa 1970 appear to have some validity. A buyer would buy a batch of guitars and place a name on the guitars import them to the U.S. and sell them through a number of stores. The same guitars ordered by a second buyer would have a completely different name and be imported to the U.S. and sold through a second shop. Same guitars different names. I bought a "Crown" classical six string through Wallichs Music City in 1969. I am sure the same guitar was sold under several other names. Spruce top, rose wood back and rose wood finger board. Today at a garage sale I bought a six string Orlando, in a cardboard case with three sets of new strings for $12.00. She started the negotiations at $15.00. The edge of the sound hole is painted black so I cannot determine whether the top is solid Spruce. It is not important what your guitar is worth. If you like it and the sound is right, enjoy the heck out of it. |

The old man that owned the shop noticed me looking at all his vintage guitars and amps and that I couldn't afford what he had. He asked me to come back the next day and he would bring some more in he had stashed in his attic at home. I went the next day and he had a few more for me to look at. They're cases were covered with years of dust but inside was a treasure. The one was a beautiful Orlando les paul, black with gold hardware. Semi hollow body, pearl inlays, white and black trim, and in perfect condition. I got it for 65 dollars and it is still the best guitar i have ever played.. |

Beautiful shape with sunburst, mop pick guard and selector switch plate. Could it be the same one I had? I'd like to think so due to the rarity and the fact that it was still in the same state, but who knows. Saw another guitar for sale almost exactly like it but with the Aria logo, so I tend to agree with that crossover connection. As an aside I've got a 60s Voxton, similar style but no striking comparisons like Cameron mentioned with the model he saw. |

It had a large scratch down the front and some other cosmetic damage. Frets were worn down to the nub. the orlando is the best sounding guitar that I have an is and absolute joy to play. Thier value is in the playing. You probobly couldn't get much for one so your better off to play it or gift it to someone who will play it and enjoy. Several "experts" have said that it was an ibenez made guitar so that seems to be the real deal. Mine has the adjustable copper bridge which I have not seen on any other guitars anywhere. If this a knock-off then what was it copied from...Hmmm |

I got a nice Taurus guitar years ago and then gave Mom the Yamaha my parents had bought me in 1966. She played for years and then gave up playing and gave my old Yamaha to my brother. When she passed away, it was a surprise to me that she had this Orlando. It says the model is 317 which I haven't seen in this thread or the other I found. It's a lovely guitar with dark orangish-brown wood on the face. The bridge has obviously been replaced because it's white and the other plastic parts on the guitar are yellow. I wish I could ask Mom where she got it. She wasn't the type to go to garage sales. I just put strings on it and it sounds so good that I had to try to find out about it. I guess it will remain a mystery, but I love it. |

He said he paid $400 for it then, the shop owner was very fond of this particular guitar. He recalled that "Paul Simon played an Orlando..." I haven't verified this, but its a fun story. He said the back and sides are solid Rosewood, I bet the top is too. There are no brand markings on the guitar other than a simple identification sticker visible through the sound hole. He recalled being directed to the small shop by the wife of the pastor who married him and my mom. The pastors wife was apparently a guitar player, and quite good. He bought the guitar from a girl who worked at the shop named Miriam, who "as I recall, was jewish, and a phenomenal guitar player." My inspection of the guitar shows no flaws, it has some wear from age. The inside is very clean. My dad thought the top was Ash, but I feel it may be spruce... not sure though. The top is a really nice piece of wood. Rosewood fingerboard, peghead overlay with a "zipper" style inlay down the middle of the slotted headstock. The original tuners are silver with white tuning buttons, facing backwards from the front of the headstock. I believe the binding is rosewood as well. The rosette is simple, maybe a decal... but hard to be 100% sure of that, the finish appears to raise only by 100ths of an inch over the inlay/decal. It looks very nice, regardless. The bridge is rosewood with a small amount of inlay decorating it to match the sound hole and peghead. I'll never sell this guitar. But sometimes it is the story behind the instrument that makes it special. Maybe helpful to someone, maybe not. |

Not sure about the acoustics but I've had several 6 and one 12-string Orlando 335 copies and can say that they are exactly the same as the Conrads, which actually have a searchable history. All those came out of the same consolidated Japanese factories (different specializations)...heigt, winston, ventura, teisco, conrad, orlando and on and on. |

The old lady told me she had it for years in the garage and had got it from somebody who may have been the original owner. She got it in the 60's and he had well before that. With that being said one day I was talking to a fellow collector and I was telling him about a couple rare finds I got my hands on. When I mentioned the orlando and told him the story, he offered me 5 grand without seeing it. I told him it was in good condition and after making clear I would never sell it ( because its sound is priceless ) he told me in good shape its worth 14 to 15 grand depending on the buyer. I've been unable to verify this but he would of handed me cash that day and driven the 40 or so miles to my house, so its gotta be worth something.........but if it really is I wouldn't sell it anyway |

Have been looking for a long time to figure out about my Orlando model# 312. This is a classical style without a pick guard, has the sticker around the hole. Other than the sticker it has quality rosewood, etc. Got it as a gift from a friend after I was injured in 2001 and wanted to learn to play. With the wide neck at the nut which helped me tremendously with large fingers. The couple pair of different nylons that I strung both of different styles have played well. The sound is crisp and clear up and down the entire neck. I lost touch of my friend so I was unable to see where he got it. But we were in the San Fernando Valley at the time where both of us had grown up. (lots of years - over 45) This guitar was really enjoyed by somebody down the line because it not only has fret wear on the learning top three but Very solid wear at 8-14. Still plays great despite the wear. It has brought me much pleasure and I have no plans on selling it as it would cost me 400-500 to match the sound quality. Thanks to all for sharing their piece of the puzzle. Aria in Japan seems to be the closest clue so far. Will keep posted of any info I find. Play well! |

The seller said it would require a little cleaning. Little was an under statement! The frett board was caked with dirt and the rest pretty filthy. Makes a guy wonder how anyone could let that happen? Anyway, after much labor and a new set of Savarez, I'm go over my Santa and His Six String book by Lisle Crowley, heavy. Which I highly recomend for beginner fingerstylers. Lookin to replace the saddle with bone but it sounds great as it is!!! I've read the thread 2 to 3 times and have enjoyed the stories. My daughter's brother-in-law had given it to her for her kids (my grandkids) to play: he had never played and knew nothing about it. When I found it, my grandkids had almost trashed it: broken the top at the front, and the bridge was coming off. I "disgustedly" took it from her and told her I would try to fix it and give it back to her kids when they would respect an instrument more. I was able to fix it easily, and you can barely tell it was damaged. So I put a set of cheap nylon strings on it, and started playing around with it. The more I played it, the more I liked it. Not only did it play like a dream, it sounded awesome. Now, I keep it hanging in my tv room, and get it down often while watching tv and just mess around on it, playing along with commercials and practicing. The more I play this guitar, the more impressed I am. Just a sweet mellow tone, and fairly decent volume when you want it. What a find! My grandkids may well have to wait to get this back as part of their inheritance! |

Er, Classical Guitar lessons: my father didn't want me to become a dope-smoking rock-n-roller. I was using a hand-me-down beater guitar... and my teacher at the time sold Mom that I needed a new guitar. The music store had just received a shipment of Orlando guitars. I remember to this day, as my mother pondered over the Orlando guitars in stock. I remember the store owner/salesman said: "This is the best, it is solid wood... but the difference in sound is very slight from this other one, which is $20 less." I remember begging Mom for the better one. She finally caved in and bought me the Orlando model 305. Her purchase price at the time was about $100. This, in 1970. I still have that guitar, and am looking at it now. Oh, by the way, I've played guitar all my life, and am now in the industry: I am Director of Public Relations for a guitar manufacturer. So I know a lot about guitars. The Orlando model 305 has Rosewood back and sides. By inspection, it's not clear whether it's solid Rosewood or laminate. But from that era, East Indian Rosewood would have been practical and inexpensive for Orlando. I'm certainly not going to drill holes to find out! On the back of the model 305, the Rosewood is 'book matched" - lending more credence that this is solid Rosewood. The purfuling (binding) top and back is Rosewood. There is hand-inlay at all areas of the binding (white-ebony-white), and with the age of this guitar, you can feel the 'raise' of the binding. It's not a decal or a fake: this is hand-inlaid stuff. The top wood of the model 305? I'm not sure. With age, it could be Spruce or Cedar. My best guess is Cedar. But I'm certain that it's Solid wood, not a laminate, based on my comparing the grains of the wood from inside the soundhole vs the top. Internal bracing is standard Classical Guitar stuff. The neck appears to be of Mahogany, and has a Scarf Joint that angles to the peg-head (bummer). The fretboard is Rosewood, and there's a Rosewood cap on the top of the peg-head. Oh and yes, a decal as a stripe down the peg-head. The tuners are adequate for a guitar of this vintage. For the model 305, the Nut and the Saddle are of unknown material, but can be easily replaced/upgraded. Overall, this is a beautiful guitar that defies its age, and certainly its original price. I have compared it with high-end Student Guitars up to the $3000 range, and it still excels. Mom would be proud that I've kept this guitar for 40+ years. It still plays and sounds incredible. If anyone else has an Orlando model 305, please respond. My take: these are incredibly well-made instruments from the past, as Japan struggled to prove that they could make quality musical instruments. |

I had compared it to a similarly priced Yamamha ($60) and another guitar slightly higher priced and liked the more full sound of the Orlando best. Though I've owned a number of guitars over the years, I still have the 301 ! I also was given an Orlando four string banjo by my father, some years ago ! |

It had belonged to his high school friend, and he had it for over 2o years. He didn't play, but kept it because his friend died in a car accident. Now I have it. I know nothing about guitars, and could find no info about this one. It has #101276 written in pencil inside the body. There is no model #, it just says Orlando. It has 5 knobs, a switch,and a big, I think, tremolo bar. It's black with a white piece on top of the base where the knobs are, and on the tuning part. It's in good shape, but covered with lots of dust.This thread has been interesting. I will come back to see if I get any response. |

My step mother who grew up in Burbank, CA owned it originally. She may have bought it near Venice Beach as she lived in the canals area in the late 60's and early 70's. she died in 1984 but I sorta already took over the playing of that guitar around 1980. It isn't quite as beat as Willie Nelson's beater but damn near. The second and third frets on the board are worn down over a quarter inch deep from the bending of the A and D strings and it has taken quite a few hits to the floor over all the years. However, it rings true to this day. Most of the damage was done before I ever got ahold of it. Imagine Venice Beach hippies banging on this thing for a couple of years. New tuners, strings and a cleaning and daily playing has made me yet again appreciate this haggard beauty. The deep tones are just amazing. This guitar has traveled the states and was abused more than slightly but now resides in Colorado and gets taken out to the porch and is played with respect and a joy that few know. It isn't the only guitar I own, however it is the only guitar that I've written about. I wrote lullabies for my daughters on it 30 years ago, it suffered searing heat of the Joshua Tree National Monument days, the freezing chill of high Sierra nights and yet it still plays well. I am thrilled to have found this thread because I remember when "made in Japan" was synonminus with cheap but who understood back then cheap would also bring joy for a lifetime? Testimony to a good glue job with quality materials. Buy a new guitar? Well, I guess, if you have to. |

I focused on it primarily because the seller was close enough that I could pick it up and save the $35 shipping costs. Competative advantage, you see. Seller said it was like new, and it was except for a detail I'll get to in a second. Since I was the only bidder, I took it away for a cool $12.50. I was surprised to see it had a solid spruce top rather than laminated. Unfortunately my seller, knowing nothing about guitars, had just put a new set of steel strings on, and lifted the bridge a tad. I was dissapointed, but put on the correct strings, and played it anyhow. Slowly, I came to appreciate what a well made and great sounding guitar this is. Nothing in the under-$200-when-new class can touch this. Heck, if it weren't for the damaged bridge, I would pay $200 for it used. If you've got one, if it has low action and sounds good, *don't* let go if it. You may be looking at $300-$400 to replace it. Just one man's opinion. |

I was taking guitar in H.S. and these were the guitars we were using in class. My teacher highly recommended them so for my 16th birthday my Mom and I split the cost of one, which I think was about $150. I stopped playing after I graduated, but I always kept my guitar and am now thinking of learning to play again. It's been kept in a nice case this whole time and pretty much just needs to be restrung and tuned and I should be good to go. Glad to know from this site that my music teacher was right and that these are decent enough guitars. |

It has never failed me with its beautiful tone and resonance even after all these years of travelling the world. No name or marks, but its built as described here and in these pictures: http://www.offsetguitars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=53671 The guitar is a total wreck. New paint and some bad tuners and bridge. After removing some of the paint I found the original sunburst colour and old wear and tear. This guitar has been played a LOT! It has humbuckers which I think has been canged, and now all I have to do is get it back to a playable state. I hope it will play great! Hope to find out more about the guitar soon. |

It's been in a closet in it's original case for most of the last 30 years (I never played much). Other than a few scratches on the back from belt buckles, it's in great condition. Back in the mid 1970s at a party in the Malibu area, a friend of a friend -- a session guitarist who had worked with Jackson Browne and Linda Ronstadt (testing my memory now...David Lindey or Lindsey, something like that) played around with it for a few minutes and wanted to buy it from me immediately. He said the action was as good as his Martin 6 string, and the sound superb. I thought about it seriously, but decided to keep it (despite being a college student who could have used the money). Later that evening when I told him my decision, he smiled and told me to never sell it; he said this guitar had great sound and was worth way more than the original cost. Judging from the previous posts, many other people agree -- Orlando made (or was the name brand put on) a quality guitar from Japan with a great sound at a relatively inexpensive price. Inexpensive does not mean cheap. Almost every musician who has played my guitar over the years has tried to talk me into selling it, and that alone speaks volumes. I originally found this thread googling Orlando guitars because I was considering selling it, since I don't play it. But after reading this thread, I think I'll keep it. Someday, someone will appreciate it, even though it's hard to find any information about the history of Orlando guitars! |

I quickly moved on to an electric guitar and didn't really play it much for a while. In recent years, however, I rediscovered what a great guitar it is, and my son now plays it as well. I have used it on several recording projects and it sounds great. I also own an Orlando 5 string banjo and an Orlando mandolin, both of which are great instruments. Both of these were purchased in the mid to late 70's through a music store in southern California. Like everyone else here, I have often wondered about the company that manufactured these but have been unable to find anything about it. |

In 1977, my brother and I bought a pair of Orlando 335 acoustic 6-string, steel string guitars for $80 each in the SF valley (SoCal). In the ensuing decades those guitars have been played for countless hours in practice, as well as at gigs and recording sessions. They aren't the very best-sounding guitars ever made (suffering from poor dynamic range and slightly muddled tone), but they're good enough that it wasn't until we could afford radically-better instruments that we bothered to get different guitars. |

Tony was a not a actual part of the company. Although he may have been brought in as an advisor or something similiar to that. I have 13's on the 12 string tuned down to a C sharp. A minr third all strings, kinda boomy and a nice tuning for a change. |

Currently on Ebay various Orlando guitars are selling from $399-1200, The ad says the only id on the guitar is #283, which I thought might be a model number. I guess if I buy it I will have to name it, and tell all the kiddies what I learned...(i.e. they seem to be, as were most Japanese guitars better made, longer lasting, and increasing in value with age more than any of the other Asian countries that were given the business of making cheap knock off Imports which is why, I would guess, Japan quit,unwilling to manufacture Junk just to compete.) |

I got my Orlando classical guitar in Studio City, CA for $40 about 3 years ago. I did not know much about the guitar from the seller's posting other than it was an Orlando. I did an Internet search on Orlando guitars and came up with only this tidbit of info - that The Orlando guitar company was a Japanese company from the 1970s that was trying to make its mark in the U.S. guitar market and that the Orlando guitars had some significant value attached to them. So I initially had bought this guitar because of its value, both historically and monetarily (both of which I think were unknown to the seller at the time who might otherwise have had second thoughts about selling the guitar for so low a price, if at all for that matter). Besides all this, I really had no other info on the instrument - it was still something of an enigma to me. I still didn't know, for example, where the guitar originally came from or what the model it was (due to someone gluing another label over most of what I could make of the top of the lettering of the Orlando label underneath). So for about 3 years, playing this guitar has been a pleasure but also a veiled mystery to me. Since I came across this forum page recently, I read in a guest post that Orlando quite possibly had its origin in the Matsumoku factory. In another post by Denise Thorpe, she said that she acquired an Orlando 317 model guitar with dark orangish-brown-colored wood to the face. Well, I did some more digging for an Orlando 317 model since Denise Thorpe's guitar is physically the same complexion as mine. As it turns out, I found a photo of a guitar sold on eBay that looked exactly like mine. I read the following info - Orlando guitar model 317 - made by Matsumoku. The seller was from New Mexico. This confirms the earlier posting someone made about Orlando guitars being possibly badged by Matsumoku. There is no denying that truth here and someone out there is now experiencing the good craftsmanship and beautifully warm tone of this instrument. I don't know about anyone else, but I am a true believer of the transcendent power of music - just look how the sound of Orlando has enraptured us all! If anyone has any other pertinent info on the history of Orlando guitars, please feel free to share - we can all draw lots of good energies from our stories. |

This seems to be a "baby" dread size or Parlor sized guitar. It has a beautiful voice and sound! It plays well and the intonation is good. I may sand the saddle down for slightly better action but it's quite playable as is. I have tons of guitars both acoustic and electric but after reading this thread and the other meager info online about Orlando's i figured this must be a gem and another nice addition to my herd! Keep on picking! |

From: GUEST I just purchased an Orlando Model 316 small nylon string guitar from The Guitar Shoppe in Laguna Beach, CA for $189 plus tax. It says Japan on the label inside. I wanted a small guitar to practice on during an upcoming road trip and this one sounds and plays pretty good. The tuners are a little sticky and the strings bind a little in the nut, but it’s okay for my purpose. |
