Tech: the Bloody 'ERROR' Page!

Subject: Tech: the Bloody 'ERROR' Page!
From: Bugsy

For some time now, I've not been able to search for individual threads in the lyrics and knowledge search engine .

Every time I hit the search button I get the "ERROR" page.
I'm now confined to reading and responding only to threads that show on the list in the "Lyric & Knowledge" Page.

Does anyone else have this problem, and is there a way I can get back to enjoying the Mudcat in its entirety?

Cheers

Bugsy

It has helped me to hit the reload button with the browser,
usually when the reload happens then it goes to the proper page.
Good luck.

Refresh your browser if you hit a general message. It's the F5 key on a Windows machine.

The search features at Mudcat are wonky. Here are a couple of threads discussing workarounds:

Tech: Mudcat SEARCH engine tips-try the Filter

Tech: Google Chrome search fixes (img & Mudcat)

Joe has also placed instructions in the FAQ page.

Here's another one.

The simplest fix is to let Google do the searching. You can tell it to search mudcat only by using the SITE prefix in the Google search box. So instead of searching on Mudcat for, say, "The Golden Vanity," type the following into your Google search box:

site:mudcat.org "Golden Vanity"

(or whatever search terms you want. You don't need the quotes; they just tell Google to search for the two words RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER.)

Google Advanced Search lets you enter a set of words, exact words or phrases, filter out words you know will bring wrong results, etc.

If you enter the site or domain, type the entire https://mudcat.org. When just "mudcat.org" is entered Google adds www and messes up the search.

Google seems to have learned better, now; when I use that technique, it gives identical results for "site:mudcat.org" and "site:https://mudcat.org" -- I just ran tests to verify this.

Still, you are probably right that it's better to use the true and correct domain name, just to get in the habit. Also, the search was 0.03 seconds faster with the correct name. :-)
