BS: microwave health risks

While microwaving plastic accelerates the release of BPA and phthalates, it's not the only way these chemicals can end up in your food or drinks.

Makes sense, Sandman. I'll confine my microwaving to food on ceramics.

I know people who won't use microwaves because they are afraid of plastic but who cannot be convinced that not using plastic containers eliminates that danger. They seem to believe that the microwave itself inserts plastic into your food.

I know people who won't have microwaves in the house. There are ways to test for leaks. Easiest is with a fluorescent bulb.

The fluorescent bulb trick worked in early particle accelerators.

Combining pulsed microwave and ultrasound, 60 Minutes last night described Russian weapons that can blast holes in people's cochlea and semi-circular vesicles. The damage is painful and long-lasting.

Misread that as semicircular testicles. I thought, aren't they all...

Microwave ovens have limited power, and unless you are standing right in front of one which is on, you have little to fear. Even backing away a few inches or feet subjects the microwaves to the inverse square law of diminishment. The danger to you is 'heat' that it will cook you. I do not think microwaves constitute ionizing radiation (like in nuclear reactors and nuclear medicine). Also, the waves tend to concentrate in the outside surfaces of things. So you would feel them and instinctively move away.

The shielding of those tiny holes on the door do work but a service man on a microwave tower can't move away.

When I tried sterilizing soil with microwaves I discovered pill bugs were impervious. I think it is due to their size and low moisture.
