22 Jan 00 - 05:43 PM (#166860) Subject: Posting Links - examples From: Joe Offer OK, I give up. I've been telling people not to uxzse quotation marks in links, and to use them sparingly in HTML tags. My reason is that if you leave out the closing quotes, you make a big mess. While the quotation marks are usually optional, I have to admit that the standard practice is to include them. So, I hereby bow to standard procedure and submit these as my boilerplate examples: Have I got it right? -Joe Offer |

22 Jan 00 - 10:41 PM (#166993) Subject: RE: BS: Just testing blue clicky things From: Joe Offer Hi, Jeri - I guess that in certain limited situations, the quotation marks do make a difference. They appear to be Standard Procedure, so I guess I should give in and stop recommending that people omit them. Trouble is, if people forget to close the quotation, the link gets messed up and the thread gets frozen. I prefer to simplify and leave 'em out. Trouble is, if I teach people to leave 'em out, I'm teaching nonstandard HTML. Six one, half dozen on the other. Like most of life, I guess, eh? -Joe Offer- I'm listening to two terrific children's CD's today: Faith Petric's Sing a Song, Sing Along and Never Grow Up (Anne Hills & Cindy Mangsen) |

22 Jan 00 - 11:08 PM (#167000) Subject: RE: BS: Just testing blue clicky things From: Jon Freeman I suspect you are right Joe in that it is better to stick with standards and I suppose there is always the chance of some browser working to the standard and expecting the quotation marks. It beats me why they are part of the standard though as a browser would know what to expect between the equals sign and the closing angle bracket with out them and the text the other side of the closing bracket is not enlosed with quotes. Perhaps there is a reason that somebody like Mudguard can explain but it does seem inconsistent to me though I am not particularly fond of HTML anyway. Jon |

23 Jan 00 - 04:50 PM (#167221) Subject: RE: BS: Just testing blue clicky things From: MudGuard Ok, here is the explanation: Up to now I stated that the quotes are always needed. This is wrong (I said this deliberately!). The standard does say the quotes are needed as soon as the URL contains any characters which are not letters, numbers, dot ., colon :, hash #, numbers or slash / (I think I got them all, but do not beat me if I forgot one or two characters). Joe thinks it is better not to use quotes as bad things happen if you forget one of them. I think it is better always to use them because in certain circumstances they are needed, and if you are used not to quote you tend to forget them when they are needed. I normally use an editor which allows me to insert templates (for links, text coloring and many other things). I wrote this template to contain the quotes, so I can't forget them. MudGuard |
