Just a heads-up to those not aware. 3 network are saying they will turn off 3G in the UK.
I don't expect it to be any different with other providers.

So we are all on smart phones in this parish and it won't affect us? Right? If you use an old "phone" phone - check! Or find out!

And the way I first heard it is that swanky older cars which are traffic/update/SatNav connected - do you know what technology it uses? Why would you? Well if traffic updates fail - it is telling you!
Or the spiffing SatNav (with in-built traffic updates) you have? How old?

It is what it is, but it's nice to be forewarned. Ne c'est pas?

Have a nice day - next year.

  • Vodafone completed its switch-off in early 2024.
  • EE completed its switch-off in early 2024.
  • Three expects to switch-off by the end of 2024.
  • O2 is planning to switch-off in 2025.

They turned off 3G in the US a couple of years ago. It forced a lot of people to upgrade their phones, but it cleared up a bunch of bandwidth for other uses.

Yes I've lost 3G on my Kindle which is annoying. Often when abroad I could get 3G when I couldn't get wi-fi.

Do you have a phone that can establish a wifi hotspot? You may be able to connect the Kindle to that. I often did that rather than connect my (wifi only) Kindle to each hotel wifi, which was a long-winded process.

If you use an old phone - which I do occasionally just for calls and texts - the 2g network won't be switched off in the UK until about 2033. Unless you use the 3 network which never used 3g in which case get a giffgaff SIM.

I have just been on a train from Margate to London - the connection toggled between 3G and 4G several times. If the phone companies can't even cover the whole of Kent with 4G it's not looking good for more remote places.
