New CD about boat building - M. Garvey

Hi. I am back after several years away. I am working on a new CD and have some questions. I probably have enough songs but let me know if something strikes your fancy or you have written one. Could be room for one or two more people. Song must not have copyrights..either trad or you or your friend wrote it and would give permissions. This makes life much much easier.

I have questions on copyrights. We want to include figurehead carver. I believe a long ago person wrote words and Dick Swain wrote tune. Does anyone know how to go about copyright?

I know I said no copyrights but I probably will have to do a couple. Other one is Shipyard Apprentice. Some say Archie Fisher, some give a cowriter and tune by someone else. I really want those two songs for sure.

Other is Blue Nose by Stan Rogers. If there is anything I hate worse than regular copyrights..like USA ones...it is Canadian ones. I don't think I have it in me. I respect copyrights but I also try not to get entangled with them. But if you can suggest something for this one too please let me know.

Would love, if room, a few songs in other languages. Basque? French? who knows. m. garvey

Mary, I'm so glad to see you back and working on a musical project! I've wondered how you're doing.

If there are any of my father's songs you'd like to use you're more than welcome, just let me know. Did Stan James or Bob Nelson write any songs? Stan in particular was all about boats.

Thanks. I know your father wrote some humorous songs, like navigating by cow, but I can't think of any that refer to boat building. Stan might have sung some but I will think and especially about copyright permissions, my bugaboo.

What do I do about Dick Swain writing a tune for Figurehead Carver?

I have a recording of Shipyard Apprentice, performed by Alistair Hulett. The liner notes attribute the song to Archie Fisher.

Re: The Shipyard Apprentice - According to https://www.tobarandualchais.co.uk/, the lyrics are by Archie Fisher and Norman Buchan, music by Bobby Campbell.

My partner Fred Gosbee wrote a song about bargaining with a boat builder for a new boat and ending up marrying the builder's daughter
"Cappy John's Bride"

Hi, Mary -
"Bluenose" is registered at Songfile.com, so all you do is go to songfile and pay for a license. It's not horribly expensive.

I'm still waiting for a reply from John Roberts, and I'm guessing he will say the same thing as Dave Webber and Ani Fentiman - that Dick Swain informally gave them verbal permission before he died, and that there's no evidence that Dick registered a copyright on the melody.

"Shipyard Apprentice" is also registered at songfile.com, so I'd suggest getting a license there.

Thanks. I am not interested in Bluenose, if you mean by Stan Rogers. I will not do canadian copyrights unless it is the best song in the world. Maybe not even then.it is a legal minefield.

Hi, Mary - "Bluenose" was written in Canada, but it is registered in the US and you can get a license from songfile.com. If you need help paying the license fees or getting the licenses, I know people who would be glad to help you.

I am trying to get into songfile to register shipyard apprentice. I am going to pass on Bluenose. Julia, I would be honored to include Fred's song, and at this point I have to say space available. There probably be space but i am waiting to hear from others already theoretically included.

Songfile is not sending me a confirmation number like it should. Will try again later.
