This is a folk music discussion forum. We have no need to become a dumping ground for unsorted poems that are copy-pasted from other Websites. If you want to talk about a particular poet or poem or collection of poems, that's another matter. There are other Websites that collect poetry. One I like is the Poetry Foundation.

Yes, I am quite aware that many poems have been set to music, including those of Thomas Hardy. Historic poems are readily available and nicely indexed at many excellent websites. There is no need to duplicate those collections here. This is a discussion forum. If you want to post something and discuss it, fine. If you want to just dump shit here, use a toilet.

That being said, the poem Tim posted is a gem, and certainly worthy of discussion. But you, Sandman, have not posted a single poem or bit of information in this thread.

The tunes in the Hardy manuscripts, ones play by his own family and ancestors are one of the richest sources in England. His novels also have a number of fascinating references to the playing and singing of traditional songs and tunes; the richest of which is in Under The Greenwood Tree. The books also have a number with descriptions of dances invillages and who remembers Dave Swarbrick having the time of his life playing for dancing in the film of Far from the Madding Crowd.?

yes indeed, Vic I do remember Dave playing in the film. The other thing about that film is that peter Dashwood taught Terence stamp and julie Christie the dancing and confirmed that isla cameron did the singing, and julie christie mimed

One of the times that we booked Jake Walton at our club in Lewes, he asked if he could bring his girlfriend along with him. Well, of course. During one of his sets, he called up his girlfriend to sing a song to his hurdy-gurdy accompaniments. She has a sweet pleasant voice. Her name was Julie Christie - yes that one!

Then it is peculiar that she did not sing in the film, I wonder what was the reason that Isla was chosen to sing ,we shall never know.
