Favourite cat tunes and songs

The right wing press are reporting that The SNP Gov, here in Scotland, intend to "ban" cats and/or restrict their freedom outdoors.

It's not true, of course, but I thought it might be nice if we could give some examples of our favourite Cat tunes and songs while we still have them.

Here's a start..

Composed by Session.org member Gian Marco and can be found on the tune site there.

This is the first one that came to mind. Certainly been around and sung by many musicians. But this one is cute.

The Cat that Ate the Candle, we got it off an Altan album.

The cat that ate the candle is classic piping repertoire come to us via Tommy Reck. You have to get the flat say meow.

Anyhow, there's also The cat in the hopper. Also not a great experience for the cat, I imagine.

Jackie Daly wrote one he called The cat on the half door. A polka.

I did once have a friend's great big ginger cat take up residence in my accordion case after I left it open in his hallway while we were having a music session in his front room! Shame I can't post the photo of it!

Not from the folk genre, but always amuses me:

MY GRANDMOTHER'S CAT

My grandmother's cat grew too fat for his shelf so he slept every night on a bed.
He was almost as big as my Grandma herself because three times a day he was fed.
He was fed tuna scraps as he sat on Grandma's lap, on his back with a big napkin tied,
He ate as much as he could hold until he got too wide.

Every day pounds of salmon meat (chomp, chomp, chomp, chomp) - Sirloin of parakeet (chomp, chomp, chomp)
He ate as much as he could hold until he got too wide.

My Grandmother said that of cats she had known her favorite by far was old Dan;
He'd stand on the floor, and his eyes simply shone when she opened the tunafish can.
With his eyes shining bright, and a groan of delight, he'd rub against Grandma and purr,
'Til one day he knocked Grandma down for by then he was bigger than her.

Every day gobs of goose pate (chomp, chomp, chomp, chomp) - Followed by fish fillets (chomp, chomp chomp)
'Til one day he knocked Grandma down for by then he was bigger than her.

She fell to the floor with a pitiful scream and lay there unconscious awhile,
And when she awoke his eyes were agleam as he looked down on her with a smile.
With a gigantic paw, he poked my old Grandma as he gave her a horrible grin;
He looked at her legs, and he peered at her arms wondering where to begin.

Aged, but tender parts, (chomp, chomp, chomp, chomp) - Mouse morsels a la carte (chomp, chomp, chomp)
He looked at her legs, and he peered at her arms, wondering where to begin.

She managed to climb, despite her bad back to the top of her old Frigidaire.
She threw him two steaks, his favorite snack which he always took medium rare.
The three awful days that she spent upon the fridge seemed to her like a lifetime, at least;
She threw to the floor all the food that she could find to fill up the ravenous beast.

All sorts of merchandise (chomp, chomp, chomp, chomp) - Hams of the family size (chomp, chomp, chomp)
She threw to the floor all the food that she could find to fill up the ravenous beast.

She stayed there three days, till she ran out of stuff and the giant was snarling for more!
He was standing and nibbling on her right scuff when the family burst in through the door.
It took twenty men to shut him in a pen and ship him away to the zoo;
Let this be a lesson to all, both great and small---that your pets should be smaller than you.

Carte blanche you can't afford (chomp, chomp, chomp, chomp) - Cut out the smorgasbord ( chomp, chomp, chomp)
Let this be a lesson to all, both great and small--- that your pets should be smaller than you.

great thread thanks for your posts

Love this brilliant parody, my first thought was to send it to a friend who volunteers for a cat protection group, naturally she is very serious about protecting cats, & didn't like a cartoon I showed her once ... (ps. no cats were harmed in the cartoon!)

here's Canadian National Film Board award winning cartoon 'The Cat Came back' former Mudcatter John Weldon was part of the team

Speaking of Jackie Daly, he recording a set of two tunes (slides as I remember) called Trip To The Jacks and Where Is The Cat on his album Music from Sliabh Luachra Vol 6 in the 70s. Without that album I would never have got into playing Irish tunes.

The cat’s rambles to the child’s saucepan.
Great tune, that’s a slide too, I think the Bothy Band recorded it.
George Melly used to sing a song called ‘Black Cat Blues’ which was risqué and funny in equal measure.

He’s Nobody’s Moggy Now - Eric Bogle ? 1983

Somebody's Moggy by the side of the road
Somebody's pussy who forgot his highway code
Someone's favorite feline who ran clean out of luck
When he ran onto the road and tried to argue with a truck
Yesterday he purred and played in his pussy paradise
Decapitating tweetybirds and masticating mice
Now he's just 6 lbs of raw minced meat that don't smell very nice
He's nobody's Moggy now

Oh you who love your pussy be sure to keep him in
Don't let him argue with a truck the truck is bound to win
And upon the busy road don't let him play or frolic
If you do I'm warning you it could be CAT-ostrophic
If he plays out on the roadway I'm afraid that will be that
There'll be one last despairing MEOW and a sort of squelchy SPLAT
And your pussy will be slightly dead and very, very flat
He's nobody's Moggy, just red and squashed and soggy
He's Nobody's Moggy now - Ooohmm

From Schooner fare's "Schooner Kids" album
A CAT NAMED PATRICK FINNEGAN
words and music by Chuck Romanoff

Patrick really is one of the Romanoff family cats. The song is
dedicated to the memory of "Mr. Kitty," the much beloved and very
missed Rowe family cat.

I've got a cat named Patrick Finnegan,
Scritch, scratch, scratchin' at the door.
He wants someone to let him in again,
Then let him out again once more.

He wants to come in. He wants to go out.
I guess he forgot where he was just a minute before.
He wants to come in again. He wants to go out once more.
He's always on the wrong side of the door.

Can you hear him meowing at the front door?
It's OK to leave it open just a crack.
He'll only be staying for a minute or so,
Then diddly bop boppin' out the back.

He can pass up a tasty meal, there's nothing to it.
But when he sees an open door, he's got to go through it.

Trip trap trippin' on his tippy toes...
Munch a little kibble for a snack....
Once around the livingroom and out he goes,
Lollygaggin' on the welcome mat.

Yes, Garrison Kiellor on Prairie Home Companion.

Together with guest Willie Nelson, there was a PHC performance of
a parody,
To All the Cats I've Known Before

which began:
To all the cats I've known before
Who wanted to come in my door
And then they turned about
And wanted to go out
So they could come back in some more . . .

It features on her album Heroes and Demons which is available on Spotify and other platforms.

And the Aberdeen Cat: my friend’s lovely cat that got run over close to her house - friend cannot stand the “Nobody’s Moggie Now” song for that reason!
