The recording I have of Matt McGuinn singing this song, on Topic's The Iron Muse (Vinyl 1963) has the first verse:-

Maybe I'm right or maybe I'm wrong
Maybe I shouldn't be singing this song
Maybe I shouldn't be telling this tale
But I'll tell it to you just the same.

Just a slight difference, but fairly significant.
