Terrible news, a talented musician and singer, and a lovely bloke.
I remember him busking in whitby back in th early seventies he was a talented banjo player back then.
He once helped me out at a gig when my duo partner did not turn up ,and was well able to busk along to anything.RIP

Very sad news. I met Tony a few times in the 1980s, and remember him as a member of "Matthews, Doonan and Wilson" doing a great night at Aberdeen Folk Club. RIP

How sad. Genuine guy, and a great and very versatile performer. He'll be missed for sure.

Sad news.

I remember Tony from the early days in clubs, festivals etc.

Also, I still own the Matthews, Wilson, and Doonan album which was a great favourite at the time.

More recently, he has performed with "The Wilson Family" as "The Wilson Family and Tony Wilson".
I'm not sure if he is a family member or not or if the name is just a coincidence. Perhaps, someone will confirm?

The latter part I knew but I wasn't sure if he was related to the family in some way or not.
Obviously his singing fitted in very well with the "family" just the same.

I knew Tony fairly well in the 1970s around the Leeds / Leeds University folk scene in England. As others have said, a lovely guy and always up for a play... Not seen his individual shows in the UK (I moved to Australia in the 80s) but I did catch a performance of the Mathews-Wilson-Doonan outfit in '81 - a couple of pics here: Mathews-bros-81.jpg, Tony_Wilson,_Essex_1981.jpg

Condolences to his family and friends.
