The tune was most popularized by Burns for "The Banks of the Devon". It's an 18th century tune (my guess is that it was originally English), and the version of it Burns got had been used for a Jacobite song about Prince Charlie in disguise, "The Brown Dairymaid", by Alasdair Mac Maighstear Alasdair about 1750.
