Dunlop Tortex Flex 2025 (picks)

Launched at NAMM, these picks have an X hole making them so easy to grip.
They are, AFAIK, a mixture of delrin and nylon and come in
.50 .60 .73, etc but avoid the .50 - just way too flexible with the hole. I made that mistake!

You should find them wherever you find Jim Dunlop stuff for around £7.99 for a pack of 12.

They're rapidly becoming my favourites.

Cheers
Fred

Thanks to whoever added "picks" to the thread title. Damn bad workmanship on my part.

Hi, Fred -
It's interesting to look at the Dunlop Website:
https://www.jimdunlop.com/tortex-flex-standard-pick-1-0mm/
    The Long Story
First released in 1981, Tortex® Picks were originally intended to be a high quality replacement for tortoiseshell. Jim Dunlop's trail-blazing creation became so much more than that, however, establishing its own identity and becoming the new standard by which all other picks are judged.

Building on the precision, consistency, and color-coded gauge system he introduced with Nylon Picks, Jim resolved to create a pick with a bright and snappy attack, superior memory and durability, and an improved grip. He chose Delrin as his base material and then spent more than a year developing a special treatment process to draw out its full potential. This treatment process is what sets Tortex Picks apart from all others, providing their unique grip-enhancing matte surface and aggressive attack. Finally, Jim expanded on his previous picks' color-coded gauge system to create the bright and timeless palette that has become an industry standard. Because we stick to Jim's original formula, Tortex Picks remain our bestselling pick line. And we still make them at the Dunlop HQ in Benicia, California.

With Tortex, Jim Dunlop launched a revolution, and the world of picks has never been the same. The turtle logo is instantly recognizable, and the vibrant Tortex palette has become a gauging shorthand for guitar players. Go into any music store and ask for Green or Yellow Picks—chances are, you'll be shown a pack of Tortex .88mm or .73mm Picks. Countless musicians across the world, representing every genre and playing style, have chosen Tortex Picks to help them do what they love.

    Made in the USA.

A side story about guitar picks:

My son wanted to learn guitar, so I told him I'd pay for lessons if he took classical lessons, because he'd learn a larger skill set. He progressed well, and after a few months I mentioned to his teacher that my son had an electric guitar. The teacher (recommended by a Mudcat friend years ago) was also a blues guy so they alternated classical and rock skills. And after a couple of years my son was able to participate in a master class with a visiting classical guitarist in town for performances.

My son was about 17 at the time, long long curly hair, looked exactly like a rock and blues performer, and was the youngest participant. During the class the instructor took time to discuss trimming their nails appropriately for playing, and described how well-trimmed nails work like a pick. In the room of about a dozen people, the instructor asked if anyone had a pick, and all eyes turned automatically to my teen-aged son. Who pulled one out of his pocket and handed it over. (I regularly fished them out of the bottom of the washer.)

Back to your discussion of high quality picks. He still plays, I should find out if he's wanting to try a new type. :)

I've been using Dunlop Prime Tones for quite awhile, the ones with raised lettering so gripping is never an issue. .88's and .96's on guitar and zouk and big triangle 1.4's on mandolin (I blunt and rebevel one of the points).

Many thanks for that, Joe.

I've always struggled with pick grip. Even the coloured Tortex would just slip. But these newly launched Tortex Flex, with that X hole, have solved the problem, and I can easily maintain good grip.

Cheers

The best picks I’ve ever used, for both grip and tone, are BlueChips. I use their TD35 (teardrop shape) and TAD35 and 40 (triangles). My hands are very dry and I have a lot of trouble trying to hold on to flatpicks but, despite their smooth surface, the Vespel material doesn’t slip in my grip. No need to drill holes in them, or fanny around with stuff like Gorilla-snot or any of the other hickey-doos that are supposed to make picks adhere to the fingers.

Expensive, but for sound and feel they are the canine’s cojones.

For you guys who've found what works for you, that's great and carry on. But I've tried so many picks since 1960, as you can imagine. None of 'em worked but I learned to get by by making small adjustments to my grip as I played. It wasn't great, in fact it was annoying, but it sorta worked and I got along.

Then, four days ago, I got these. The grip, the sound, the way the picks glide over the strings so smoothly - well, I can't now imagine using any others, or wanting to :-)

I'm a Dunlop Tortex 60mm guy myself, but I like to drill 5 little holes in the top (wide) half of the pick for grip. I haven;t broken one yet and I've been doing it for years.

I'm back and forth between the .60 and .73. I like both.

But the point is, I'd never fully control either without that X hole. A .73 standard Tortex (blue I think) would just be a no-no.

Still bloody good though :)
