Is any familiar with these beautiful lyrics ? I got the song from Chris Andreeti - alas no longer with us so I can't ask him . I can't find any reference to it
Maid on the Mountain

One evening as I rambled through fields and fine forests
I met a young girl the maid on the mountain
Her steps seemed to fall like leaves in the Autumn
I thought if I could win her me heart would be a free
as the birds singing there by the side of that wild running stream

Had I the wings and the heart of that starling
oftward I would fly to the arms of me darling
She would look upon me both kindly and sweetly
I’d shield her for ever from wintery winds
And dangers that lie by the side of that wild running stream

Ah but I was too free with all of the women
And drink was my friend on every occasion
Her father he wants for her riches and plenty
A man who would endow her with fame and with fortune
But all that I possess is my love of that wild running stream

Ah but now I am old and me bones they are weary
Time after time I return to that clearing
With sadness in me heart I search through the forest
And I’m mindful of seeing a sight or the sound
Of that fair young maid by the side of that wild running stream

It's a song by Al O'Donnell from his 1972 Trailer album "Al O'Donnell". The lyrics are already on Mudcat in the thread Lyr Add: Maid on the Mountain

Hey thanks so much - I've had Chris's version on my mind and before I start singing it out I wanted to know where it was from .
Cheers

Al O'Donnell's sleeve notes:

Maid on the Mountain. I wrote this song to try and encourage older people not to lose sight of their more youthful dreams. The tune is an adaption of the traditional Munster Cloak.
