As a youngster I never really appreciated her but tastes change and now I quite enjoy her singing. She seems to have a good sense of humour too :-)

Happy Birthday, girl from Tiger Bay!

I have a vivid memory of her on a TV variety show back during my teen years performing Hey Big Spender. When she got to the line "I don't pop my cork for any guy I see" she turned her fanny to the audience and gave it a good slap, the sexiest thing I'd ever seen up to that point and kind of shocking for the time.

Only a couple of years younger than Billy Boston (also from Cardiff). What if they'd got together? With his rugby talent, and her musicality...

"she turned her fanny to the audience"

Errrrmmm...I assume you mean her backside? You do realise that, in Shirley's native country, 'fanny' has a very different, much ruder, meaning? :-)

I suspect it was because Ms Bassey was born in Tiger Bay SRS.

When we were kids she was referred to as Burley Chassis BTW :-D

Yes, she was a girl from Tiger Bay as DtG said. Which reminded me of the film, which was shot in Tiger Bay. You can see some scenes in the trailer.
Tiger Bay (1959 film).
I had forgotten in the 50 or so years since I watched it that its star was actually Horst Buchholz who was apparantly known as "the German James Dean" and went on to appear in several well-known American films.

Surely her greatest moment was her appearance on the Morecambe and Wise show. The steps...the shoe...the boots...completely lost in smoke as she sang Smoke Gets In Your Eyes... Legendary!

I saw her live years ago - probably in the mid-70s. I couldn't believe how nervous she appeared in the first couple of songs. From then on she soared.
She blows this one out right the water ->
