Folk radio and podcasts in 2026

Just wondering what folk radio shows and podcasts exist in 2026 (UK, US or anywhere else). I listen to a lot of radio and podcasts, their my main media of choice.

I know the BBC have axed a lot of their folk radio shows. So what's out there to listen to from a trad folk perspective??

Ian Lynch's 'Fire draw near' would qualify.

Hello Matt - You might like to give Roving Folk a try.

https://www.mixcloud.com/RovingFolk/

The 4th Sunday Folk Show continues to ramble around the world of folk music with Ken Hudson and his show - ‘ROVING FOLK’. A magazine-style programme – dipping into the past, looking to the future, and Geoff Twentyman keeping you up-to-date with artists, concerts and festivals across Yorkshire and beyond; exploring the rich vein of folk arts existing in and around Calderdale; and also noting the latest releases in folk and acoustic music.
Two hours of music, based in the world of Folk – 10.00am to 12 noon on the 4th Sunday of each month on Phoenix Radio at 96.7 FM or – for listeners out of transmitter range – online at www.phoenixfm.co.uk – with podcasts available on www.mixcloud/rovingfolk after the show.

Focus on Folk, on 2MBS, 102.5 FM, Sydney, 5pm first Saturday of the month. You can listen live at 2mbsfinemusicsydney.com and also at that site you can use the Listen Anytime link to listen to the program after it has gone to air, for several months. (It's listed there under "Society Spot" because we are the program of the Folk Federation of New South Wales.)

There are about six of us who take turns presenting the program. Whether you get more trad folk or more singer/songwriter depends on the presenter and what he or she feels like playing that month.

We've been on air since 2001 – actually, since 1992, if you count our previous incarnation on a different station, under a different name.

Matt, could you do a list of the ones you already listen to?

I've got a few bookmarks for pages that attempt to list podcasts and radio shows but they are moving targets!
Might give you some leads though.
It'd be great to have some more.

In terms of radio shows (whether real-time or online), I listen to hardly any these days - that's why I asked. I was hoping people might be able to recommend some local radio folk shows, as there was a time (not a million years ago) that there were quite a few.

I think the only folk radio show I listen to is the Traditional Music Hour on Resonance FM:
https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/playlists/the-traditional-music-hour/
It's hosted by Kevin Shiels.

I listen to a lot of Irish music related podcasts. Some of these are now longer running - some only managed 4 or 5 episodes - but others may find these interesting. A lot of these mainly from a musician - rrather than a listener - point of view.

Get Up In The Cool, an Old Time American podcast - there’s a new episode every week. A great podcast - there’s hundreds of episodes to listen to.

Fire Draw Near:

Tunes From Doolin, which managed 10 excellent episodes before it finished. Some great interviews and tunes shared:

‘The Lizzes’ was another fairly short-lived podcast, which was basically Liz Carroll and Liz Knowles chatting together. Very entertaining:

Fiddler Hannah Harris’ Find Your Lilt podcast also seems to have bitten the dust, but put out a bunch of enjoyable Irish-fiddle-related interview episodes:

Here in Canada we are blessed with someone very special in the field of Folk Music. Living in Ottawa and host of a folk music radio show at CKCU is our own (and member of Mudcat) Mike Regenstreif. Hope the following is the correct site to find him.

Mike was also inducted into the Folk Alliance International Hall of Fame in 2017.

Mike and several others post links to their music shows on the Mudcat Facebook page (that's an ideal spot for that kind of post because we've kept the page public so anyone can see it and share the posts. It's the research and chat we push over here to the original Mudcat.) They used to share them over here also (there are still a lot of Mudcatters who don't "do Facebook") and on occasion we get one of them posting the link. Thanks, Adrien.

I did know this SRS but I thought it would be nice to share it here as well.

As a non-member to FB I can scroll down a few posts, before it covers the screen with a banner saying:

There's more to see.

Log in or create an account.

Some 'public' groups put the 'Sign in or sign up!' banner up sooner than others; I don't know why they vary. 'ABC Notation' is particularly restricted.

I've finally found some time to update my 'Folkimages' webpage of online Radio Shows/Podcasts and, hopefully have included the links mentioned in this email chain.

https://folkimages.com/RAD.htm

If I've missed any, or if there are others that I can add, please let me know via the webpage.

thanks
Roger
