Windows - presume Apple & Linux. Doubt it is available or even useful on phones.

FWIW New to Edge (latest update) - Split Screen is on the … menu about ? of the way down.

Annnnnnnnd once alerted to this - Question: "FireFox"? Answer: been there for some time.

FF To enable
1) type "about:config" in the URL box.
2) type "split" in the search box
3) click the RH button till true appears for split.
4) restart FF
5) right click on an open Tab "Tab"
6) click split.

All browsers have/will have by now. Somewhere in there menu system.

PS the wheel mouse click on a hyperlink wheeze (try it) opens the link in a completely new tab (unsplit) so presume any hyperlink (eg with "target=_blank") that opens in a new tab anyway - behaves the same.

What is this you're trying to accomplish?

I work on two large monitors plugged into each computer so there is a lot of desktop. I use the mouse roller button to open things in a new tab all of the time, and often have several browsers open at once. Even working on a single screen setup I never have my browser open to the outer edges, I can always see part of the desktop behind and move things around as I work. If I browse over anything on a screen and want to look closer I right click with the mouse and choose "open in new tab." Done.

What possible benefit is there of this apparent new way to open a second tab?

I occasionally want two browser windows open at the same time, to compare two documents: computer code, music scores, lyrics, ... I can already do that by opening a document in a new window instead of a new tab, and arranging the two windows side by side or one above the other. Side by side windows are best for line by line comparisons but my desktop monitor has a 5:4 aspect ratio, not the more common 16:9, and side by side windows are rather tall and thin.

So I don't think being able to split a tab in the same window will add much. Saves arranging the windows, I suppose.

An Android, fwiw, you can split the display but not have the same app running in both. So I can have, say, Firefox and Chrome in the screen side by side - on a tablet.

Yes, I should have clarified, the popup menu gives me the choice to open in a new tab or in a new window. Depending on the task at hand, both are useful.

It's a heads-up for anyone.

To see two pages side by side, formerly you had to resize each window & bugger-up all page views.
I do it all the time, but find easier mentally to have different browsers, speed is king when searching, say, satellite maps. I do it with browser & spreadsheet. If you work from one laptop in the field, this is all you had.

But there are times when having a split tab is easier. Horses for courses. Strokes for folks.

I produce maps with coloured pins and pop-ups that have hyperlinks to other resources. Offer them to people who say "thanks BUT can you filter the geographic info in a spreadsheet"!!. (for targets 1 square metre) & my map uses GPS "you are here".
Some folks are data oriented some are visual. Never the twain!
