Baillif's Daughter. How does he travel

I seem to remember singing (when the bailiff's daughter tells her true love that she is dead)
"If she be dead then take my steed
    My saddle and bridle also
And I will go to some foreign land
Where no man shall me know."

It all made sense when we sang it at school but now I wonder how he will get to his destination, if he gives away his horse. Also why he thinks life will be any better there.

Walk, like a proper pilgrim

There's nobody there who can remind him of his loss

I think he would have sailed, like the son in "What Put the Blood".

Since the song is of English origin, he'd have to have sailed unless going to either Scotland or Wales. If he'd gone to either of those countries he'd probably have named them directly.
