Does anybody have the lyrics to the 200 Year Old Alcoholic by Liam Clancy?

You might try going to The Liam Clancy Official website and emailing them, if no one else on here turns up with them. I didn't see lyrics per se at that site, but it looks pretty new and they are asking for input on the site, itself and list an email addy, so maybe they could help.

Good luck,

THE 200-YEAR-OLD ALCOHOLIC

CHORUS: Oh, it’s never to late to start living,
To get out and have some fun.
The sun will just as shiny in the morning
As the first day the world begun.

When I was eighty, I started smoking. Took to drinking at eighty-five.
At ninety, I started courting. Thank God that I was alive!
Ninety-five saw me in business, determined to rake in a pile.
At a hundred, I made my first million—Whoopee!—and I started living in style. (CHORUS).

Well I moved to an uptown penthouse, used fifties to light my cigars,
Developed a taste for fine champagne, drove fast Italian cars.
But the doctor he give me a warning and a lecture on right and wrong.
If I didn't give up my sinful ways, I couldn't live very long.
But I said to him, (CHORUS)

It gets kinda sad from here on in.

Now I'm a two-hundred-year-old alcoholic and the nicotine’s caught up on me.
But worst of all, in this morning’s mail, I got a suit for paternity.
Now I'm not really unhappy ‘cause maybe I'll have me a son,
And his mornings will be just as shiny as the first day the world begun. (CHORUS)

Sing like you mean it! (CHORUS)

By Liam Clancy. From the "Makem And Clancy Concert,” Shanachie 52003

Thank you kindly for the speedy comeback...that is the song I recalled hearing...also on that same show, they sang as the finale "My Get Up and Go Has Got Up And Went". Another favorite.

Mind, there's a lot more young drunkards than there are young doctors. (And there's a lot of young drunk doctors, or at least medical students.)

What a coincidence. I started the same thread a few days ago! Only, nobody responded (sigh...). Anyway, I will try it again: does anybody have the tune to this song?

Wow!!!!!!! I learnt that song this year after a visit to the west coast of Ireland.I give credit and thanks to Tim, the manager of "Dan Foleys Pub" in Annascaul Co.Kerry for giving me the tune and words. Was not to sure were it came from though - now I know, thanks.

Well, there seems to be at least one person who actually knows the tune. So, fellow tune-seekers, do not despair (yet...)

On the vid, Clancy said he got the song from an uncle, so he [Clancy] didn't write it, anyone know who did & when?

I heard him say it was sent to him anonymously on a cassette years ago.

It's different in that it's a positive view of getting old- I did it last night in a singing session & of course lots of sympathy from the assembled singers of a certain age....

might pluck up courage & attempt John Eaglesham's 'You never need your nookie when you're ninety' next time- slightly risque but equally positive about an otherwise depressing topic.....
