I should have studied it more." -Chet Atkins, upon the recent occasion of the unveiling of his statue in Nashville. |

27 Jan 00 - 09:40 AM (#169109) Subject: RE: Thought for the Day - Jan 27 From: catspaw49 Not surprising. When I lived in Nashville, I saw him several times and in his live performances he is also a wonderful storyteller and one of the most self-deprecating people on the planet. The "stars" are very accessible in Nashville and are often involved in a lot of community activities. Chet Atkins could always be counted on to lend his support to worthwhile projects. Nashville was an interesting town in that so many big names could be found out and about doing the mundane, everyday things and enjoying the same amusements as everyone else. Always struck me as kinda' nice. The ones that didn't get involved may have been big nationwide, but they were generally not thought of as well in town. Spaw |

I heard the album he did with Mark Knopfler "Neck And Neck" and they did some beautiful work together--especially on Django's "Tears," with Mark O'Connor playing the part of Stephane Grappelli...quite capable of producing tears. I also like "Waltz for the Lonely." Easy to identify with. --Mbo |

Sorry it's hit you. I think it is our ability to want to continue learning which keeps us young, interesting, and vibrant. It's hard to think there'd be much more Chet would learn about the guitar, though. Spaw, my son loved Nashville; just spent a weekend there awhile back. Feel better, Peter. luvyaKat |

27 Jan 00 - 12:48 PM (#169186) Subject: RE: Thought for the Day - Jan 27 From: Davey Peter, wait it out, and don't try to push yourself back into a normal routine until the symptoms are gone. I had it a couple of weeks ago and took 3 days off work. On the third day I was feeling OK but I stayed home anyway, and I think that made the difference. Thanks for the Chet Atkins quote, rather understated for someone of his stature, but it shows his humility.. Davey... (:>) |
27 Jan 00 - 10:43 PM (#169503) Subject: RE: Thought for the Day - Jan 27 From: GUEST,Neil Lowe ditto kat's and Davey's comments......an amazing quote from someone who described a typical day in so many words that essentially could be summed up: woke up... grabbed my guitar and started playing; fell asleep sixteen hours later with guitar in hand. I have heard that Chet's inspiration, Merle Travis, was as equally self-deprecating. On occasion he would muse to his audience, "I don't know much about guitar. Now that Chet Atkins, he can play. I wonder if he's onstage somewhere tonight saying good things about me?" He probably was. Chet Atkins was "da man" around our house when I was growing up. My dad played his records and copied his thumbpicking style in his own playing. Chet's music was probably my first introduction to guitar. Get well soon, Peter T. Thanks for the quote. Regards, Neil |
