Help: Chords in songbooks and magazines

Subject: Chords in songbooks and magazines

From going through several song books and magazines for many artists, I have noticed that quite frequently songs printed in them, are in different keys than that which artist recorded them in. The versions of several Phil Ochs and Tom Paxton songs, in sing out magazine and songbooks are in completely different keys than they were recorded in, does anyone here know why that practice exists? THanks

Hi - I think songbooks often try to print songs in keys that are easier for the majority of people to sing and play. The songs on Ochs and Paxton recordings are keyed a bit too high for me (and some have chords that are impossible for beginner guitarists), so I'm pleased to see arrangements in a lower key. John Denver's song keys are even harder to match.
