HALFWAY TO HEAVEN
Words and Music by Harry Chapin

C#m - B - Amaj7 - C#m

       C#m                  B
There's no tick tock on your electric clock

    Amaj7                C#m
But still your life runs down

                            B
There's no tick tock on your electric clock

    Amaj7                C#m
But still your life runs down

E - F#m - G#m - A ( 2x's )

    E          F#m          G#m             A
I'm halfway to heaven and my home in Forest Hills

    B          C#m         D       C#m    B
It's half past eleven, I've got some time to kill

E                  F#m      G#m             A
I missed bus connection, my train got in too late

         B                C#m          D    C#m   A
And I'm forced into reflection by this half-hour wait

    E             F#m               G#m               A
Now I have been a straight man and I played it by the rules

            B                C#m         D       C#m       B
I've been a good man, a good husband, a good old fashioned fool

         E                     F#m            G#m         A
I have a fine wife and two children just like everybody's got

          B                  C#m          D    C#m            A
But after fifteen years of marriage, the fires don't burn too hot

    A                E/B
Ah, someone played a trick on me

G#7/B#               C#m
They set me up so perfectly

A                     E/B
The gave me their morality

       G#7/B#                     C#m
And then changed the rules they set for me

A               E/B
Someone must be laughing now

G#7/B#                   C#m
Although it don't seem funny somehow

A                     E/B
How the world's accepting now

G#7/B#                   C#m             F#7
What they once would not allow back in my younger days.

    B7                      E
The world has changed, in so many ways.

   E                        F#m7
My mother once said to me, so many years ago now

G#m7                   Amaj7
"Don't you touch those bad girls."

G#m7       Amaj7
So I never had girls

G#m7          Amaj7         D
Until I had my Mary when we married

   G#m7          Amaj7
My Mary then had my two sons

   G#m7                Amaj7
My life as a lover was already done

       G#m7 Amaj7       D          A
It was over before it had really begun

   A                E/B
Ah, someone played a trick on me

G#7/B#                   C#m
Just sent this little girl to me

A             E/B
She is my new secretary

G#7/B#                   C#m
And she's something to see

             F#7
Yes, she's a nice girl

            B7
But it's a young world

       E                Amaj7
And she lives her life so free

       E                     Amaj7
And she sure gets through to me

E - Amaj7 - G - B

               E            F#m7
She brings her pad into my office

            G#m7            Amaj7
She wears a sweater and a skirt

B                   C#m
Somewhere deep inside of me

D       C#m       B
Something starts to hurt

      E                F#m7
She's wearing nothing underneath

      G#m7                  Amaj7
I can see what there's to see

    B                        C#m
She smiles and says, "You wanted me?"

D   C#m    A
I'd have to agree

    A               E/B
You know how much I want her

   G#7/B#                  C#m
And I know that I could have her

A      E       G#7      C#m
I know I could, I know she would

    F#7            B7
Make love to me, so wonderfully

    C#m
God damn!

       F#7            B             C#m
I'm one crazy mixed up mixture of a man

      E             Amaj7
In my head all my life

            E          Amaj7
I've been a sinner

          E                Amaj7
And in my bed with just my wife

         E          Amaj7
I'm still a beginner

      E       Amaj7
But tomorrow night

    E          F#m7
I'm taking that little girl

       C#m         B - A - C#m
Out to dinner!

       C#m                  B
There's no tick tock on your electric clock

    Amaj7                C#m
But still your life runs down

                            B
There's no tick tock on your electric clock

    Amaj7                C#m
But still your life runs down

Great song ...

.... And now I've got this stupid idea running around in my head that insists on munging together this song and another into "Halfway up the stairway to heaven" .... sigh ...
