Davenson mentions the lines J'ai vu le loup, le renard, l'alouette J'ai vu le loup, le renard chanter... turning up as the chorus of a maumarieé song elsewhere, and I have an album made by Jean-Francois Dutertre (1974) which includes a ronde from Normandy with the chorus J'entends le loup, le renard et la belette, J'entends le loup et le renard chanter. Belette is a weasel. All this may be completely useless to you, of course, but perhaps it may give you some clues. Anyhow, it's given me something interesting to do for a while instead of working! There is a Breton band Manau - a kind of French rap band with pipes and bombardes - who do an interesting verion of J'entends le loup, le renard et la belette. Its different anyway! There are a couple of websites that have sound clips of it lurking out there somewhere. |

The tune is based on a 14th century Dies iræ, he says. On "Diapason turquoise 1, Les Presses d'Ile de France,2001", they give 4 versions of it and they say that there are many versions with different tunes and lyrics in France and Belgium -they don't mention Canada. There are two Occitan versions that I know of.
