I think I first came to the Mudcat via a link on the OCTMA web page.

How about you ?

I had promised my sister I would make CDs for her of all the songs I knew; when I counted them up, there were over three hundred, and some of the words had fallen off the mental jukebox due to disuse; anxiously, fired up Search Engine and Lo! The Mudcat loomed through the mists, offering a bright light and a full set of lyrics! Been coming back ever since!

Searching through folk related pages about 18 months ago when I got on the net. Stayed ever since despite the dispirited comments that have been of late. But this has got to be THE place to be! If you're interested in folk music. Where else is there live radio, song/chord database, general accord and some quite bolshy arguements.Couple that with the friendliest of people over the net and in person what else is there. Viva Mudcat! Cheers. Eric

I used to use the DT here on Mudcat way back in '97 (!) But I never knew there was a forum here! Last April, I came looking for lyrics--and got my request answered by PJ in less than an hour. I was a bit of a lurker, but in June, I decided it was high time I started joining in. There was too much music fun going on without me!

When I got internet access in the office more than two years ago I followed an obsolete link to the DT from a German website (now http://mysongbook.de), was redirected and landed right in the middle of the Mudcat Café. I must have been back almost every day since. Most of the time, it's all I need on the Net. Keep it going! - Susanne

I ate some brownies at a party that had a sign in front of them that said acoustic (next to the electric ones). Next thing I know, I wake up with my face on my keyboad and a new Web site called the Mudcat Cafe. I must have stayed up all night or something. Funny too, cause I don't really like folk or blues music, I'm really into Polka. Strange...

I was using the database for about a year before I noticed the forum (I'm a bit like an old cellar -dim at times). I started to look for lyrics when I joined a new folk club and plucked up the courage to sing something. Now I sing 'em write 'em you name it! having built up my collection of songs I am now quite content to browse the forum for a couple of hours each night, it beats staring at the t.v.!

Rick Fielding's Banjo Courses include a Music Theory accreditation. He selects the course content from the music threads on the Mudcat.
25% of my final mark is based on monthly written tests and the remainder 75% of my mark is based on a yearly final exam.
And he is tough!

I was out surfing the porn sites and a link from "Barb Carr's Menonite Nudes" page brought me here. I couldn't figure it out at first since there were no pictures of anyone here at that time, except old dead guys. But then I found the forum and Harpgirl was talking about running naked along the river, so it made sense. That was over a year ago and I keep coming back since I can no longer find "Barb Carr's Menonite Nudes" page and I know there must be a link arond here somewhere. Oh well.........

G'day,
In 1997 I was searching for lyrics & discovered the DT at the old site (Parc Xerox?). The lyrics were unavailable but I soon found the new site at Mudcat & often visited looking for lyrics. I also pointed Alison to the site.

When the discussion forum started I reckoned I didn't have time for it (& I was right, but.....).

I don't remember whether I told Alison about the forum or whether she found it herself, but she got involved & pushed me in too. Since then I haven't been able to get out.

Cheers,
Alan

Dear duobanjo,

Since you're new to the Mudcat, I'll jump in here to attempt to explain (and I'm *sure* others will follow) about the 'BS' threads. 'BS' means exactly what you think it does . . . therefore, don't be surprised when the thread creep tends to get a little *wild* at times. The 'BS' title was created so that folks could discuss subjects that were not *exactly* musical; however, it still amazes me how much music we do get out of these rants and ramblings.

My advice is to stay out of the BS threads if you find them distasteful. Most of the folks here at the 'Cat (especially the nutters above) are just having fun. If it's not your cup of tea, that's fine. You see, we have to let some of these guys and gals run a bit crazy now and again, or we don't know *what* we'd be reading in the newspapers about 'em!

I made the mistake of going to Toronto one day (I really try not to, but...well, you know...), and I was walking down the street when this guy goes...

"Psssst! Hey, buddy! Wanna get a tip on something real special?"

I look at the guy, and he is really sleazy looking. Long trenchcoat, dirty fedora, cigarette stained fingers, horrifically tasteless sports coat showing under trenchcoat.

I'm about to walk on, but he says, "Ya like folk music, dontcha?"

"Yes..." I answer, edging away.

He moves closer. "Wanna tip on the best folk music site on the Internet? Wanna real hot tip?"

"Well, what'll it cost me?" I asked.

"Thousands of hours of your time, carpal tunnel syndrome, tired eyes, and a frustrated sense of having lost your bearings, not to mention your patience, specially when your postings are totally misconstrued by certain people who decide you are a Nazi, or a fellow traveller, or a Communist, or something else like that!" he said, his eyes glinting strangely.

"I see. What's in it for me?"

"Lots of laughs, some really good music info now and then, and a chance to meet a lunatic named "Catspaw49" or just "Spaw" for short..."

What the hell. I went for it. Who was that guy, anyway?

I think Rick dresses better than that, but I know he mentions Mudcat every week on the radio.

I heard about it from a friend who insisted I look in on it and then he never showed up again! Was it something I said?

I have a friend who I think posted here once or maybe twice, and then never seen again. I wonder what the problem was? Gotta ask him if I run into him one of these days.

I had been looking for some lyrics to Irish songs, as a favor to some musician friends who didn't have a computer. Somewhere I found a link that brought me here.

In fact, the first thread I ever started was a rant about all the useless web sites I had been looking at. You can read it here.

It'll be a year for me in July. I was just beginning to learn how to play the accordion. I wanted to find some European circus music to play on it. My sister's group has a link to the Mudcat on their website (www.pyrates.com).

I had never done anything on the internet except a few primitive searches. I knew nothing about forums, message boards, news groups, or chat rooms. My sister showed me how to use the Mudcat, and I've been stuck here ever since. I've had an amazing time here. And I've met some fantastic people here in the forum, some of whom I've spent time with in the 3D world. It's been a wonderful experience.

LH, are you sure that wasn't flattop in disguise?

Erm, I think Graham Pirt (Sam Pirt's dad) mentioned it to me while I was in his band at Summerschool last year. Mind, I did spend a very unsuccessful few months desparately searching for mudcat.com. hmmm.

There I was minding my own business over a pint in the Jug when the bearded one started going on about the Mudcat cafe " Where's that Bill " I said "On the internet "he replied "Is that near here ?" I asked "Is there a bus?" He said I needed to buy a computer so I did 'cos I do as I'm told. One of my first questions was "Do slugs swing?" and the rest is history really!!!Twelve months later I'm posing nude for calendars!!!! And I'm on the 2nd computer so that conversation with Bill cost me about £2000. Hmmm! Worth every penny Bill! :)

I remember the swinging slugs, Madame Duck! Seems a very long time ago.

About 18 months ago, my brother-in-law e-mailed me a page from the DT of lyrics to As I Roved Out which we used to sing together. I browsed the DT and the forum very happily for a few months before posting for the first time in April last year.

My first thread was asking for the meaning of the phrase "Indian Giver" which got a lot of interesting respons... and I've not looked back. Thanks folks, for all you have given me since then.

Years ago at Songs of Sail in Penetanguishene, we were camping near a couple of folks from Pensylvania, I think it was. Talk led to a disk of songs called Digital Tradition. A few years later Digital Traditions website became the Mudcat Cafe, eventually last year I discovered the Forum. I don't remember the names of the people who I got the disk from but thanks anyhow. My bookmark file tells me I created my bookmark in Oct. 96. I'm pretty sure that was to the old Xerox site. I can't remember how I found it. When it moved to Mudcat I paid no attention at all the all the things Max added, the radio program, the forum, nothing. I returned frequently to look at lyrics.

Sometime early last year someone mentioned on the folktalk mailing list that this was a good place to talk about folk music. Sometime when I was here again looking at lyrics I decided to take a look at the forum. I started lurking a little over a year ago, easy to remember because it was not long before Old Songs. I joined last summer some time.

Was DT up in some form before the WEB? I seem to remember a lyrics site that used FTP. It was always busy IIRC.

From a scotch gaelic singer named Holly Morrison who I met at a very good musical gathering in my area (New England).I was complaining that it was very hard to find people to talk with about traditional songs, especially irish gaelic songs. She mentioned The Mudcat. I have been visiting here ever since. Thanks Holly if you're still visiting.
