Tune Add: Orientis Partibus

This is the tune that was inquired after in the "Sir Donkey ?" thread last Christmastime. It is an example of a melody in the mixolydian mode.

The melody is taken from the Episcopal Church's 1916 hymnal, but I have transposed it up a step and set it in the first rhythmic mode. These changes are based on what I know of the manuscript sources, and in effect retrofit the melody to an earlier form than appears in the 1916 hymnal. I've left off the little coda, however.

Translation:

From the eastern regions comes a donkey, good-looking and very strong, expert at baggage-hauling.

This one was weaned in the hills of Shechem below Reuben (N.B. Shechem is in Ephraim, not Reuben). He crosses the Jordan and prances into Bethlehem.

He is faster than Medean camels. He is able to out-leap hinnies ( = anti-mules), antelopes, and roebucks.

See the excellent donkey, the big-eared kid-under-the-collar, the lord of the asses.

The donkey's strength brings into the church Gold from Arabia, incense and myrrh from Saba.

Joe Offer once added a note to a song I posted saying that when someone puts in a lot of effort on something like this don't feel it goes unnoticed. Just because there are few or no comments doesn't mean it isn't appreciated it's just that on something as good as this there is very little one can say.

I'm glad you all like it.

Here is a MIDI of the modernized version of the tune (in 4/4 time, in the major key with the raised 7th, rather than in triple time in the mixolydian mode).
